This morning I learned the terrible news of the death of a homeschooling mom after an emergency c-section yesterday. Missey was a member of the Ambleside Online list, where I have been a lurker for years. She also maintained a lovely blog called Heartschooling. Her last post was just yesterday, a cheery account of taking her son to the doctor.
I am copying below the latest update from the AO list. Please keep Missey's family in your prayers. She leaves behind five children ages 11 to newborn.

Subject: Update on Missey's Death
This is an update from someone on the Ruth Beechick group.
I called and talked to her mil. She was SO thankful that I called and SO appreciative that we are passing this news through the homeschool community, as they are very happy that so many are praying for them.
She said that yesterday Missey went in to get her stress test that she's been getting every 2 weeks. The test showed that Missey was loosing amniotic fluid and that she had lost enough of it for it to be alarming. That's when they decided to go ahead and take the baby. After they lifted the baby from her body, some of the amniotic fluid got into her blood stream and caused a blood clot, which is what caused her death. She never came out of surgery. Her mil said that this only happens 1 in 200,000. But it happened to our Missey.
She said that the girls are holding up OK. She said that they all slept, no clung, together in their bed last night. The oldest got up at one point and asked if little Nathan could also sleep with them, so they moved him into the bed with the 3 girls. She said that Tom is just in a daze. He has gone to the hospital this morning to be able to feed the baby.
She told me that if I needed I could call back any time. She was so appreciative of my call and concern. I told her that she couldn't
imagine that number of homeschool moms who are praying for their
family right now. I told her that I was passing this horrible news along to
places that I visit, but that Missey didn't. I told her that I've prayed this same prayer for other homeschool mom's families that I didn't know and that I know other homeschool moms who didn't even know Missey would be doing the same.
Tom and Missey had chosen a name for the baby, but after Missey passed on they decided to name the baby Melissa Kate. |

She was active on The Well Trained Mind board as well, and that's where I heard the news this am. Her family is comforted by the fact that thousands of homeschooling families are keeping them in prayer.

I can't imagine the devastation and suffering this family is enduring. Many, many prayers and offerings for Missey's family coming from Texas...

We are praying for this whole family as they some how attempt to care this cross. May God hold them in His care. Blessed Mother pray for this family and wrap your mantle of love and protection around them.

Unbelievable. Our family will hold Missey and her family in our prayers. I am reminded, once again, about the importance of not taking a second for granted and of the far-reaching homeschool-praying community we are blessed to be a part of.
Love,

This is from Missey's blog. I read it on the Five in a Row boards. This news has rocked us all:
Monday, December 19
A December Retreat at Home
This is the first year that I have given myself permission to take all of December off from schooling and it has been wonderful!
Anyway, that's why I've been so quiet lately. We have been enjoying lots of family time this month. I think a month-long break is just what we needed! We have played games, eaten pizza, looked at Christmas lights, listened to Christmas music, burned scented candles, tried new recipes, enjoyed family get-togethers, gone shopping (both IRL and online), watched the birds, made Christmas ornaments, and lounged around in our PJ's and slippers as much as possible.
Life has been so laid-back and relaxed that I don't know how we'll ever get back on track come January, but I'm not going to think about that right now. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, I'm enjoying making memories with my family and letting all the worries and stresses roll right off my back. They'll be there for another day. But for today I'm going to get my Love Bank filled back up with kisses and hugs and quiet conversations (while making those same kinds of deposits into each of my loved one's Love Banks) and regain the strength to face all those worries and stresses that will still be waiting for me come January. I think that by then they won't seem so big anymore anyway.

Update from a member of Missey's BasicallyBeechik list:
Quote:
Dear Ladies of the Loop,
Thank you to each and every one of you for being here. I am certain that
Missey would be honored by your presence here. I have spoken to Missey's family and they are touched by the outpouring of love and support from everyone. They are devestated by the loss but dealing with it as best they can.
For those who want to make financial donations, it would be greatly
appreciated by the family. We have set up a memorial fund at Paypal.
http://www.mamakay.com/misseygrayfund.html
They did not have life insurance for Missey and I know this would be a
blessing to help cover the funeral and other expenses. Krystal is a long
time friend of Missey's and mine and I can assure you that each and every
penny will reach the Gray family.
The baby is doing fine and may go home tomorrow. They had a name picked out
for the baby but changed it after they lost Missey. They named her Melissa
Kate and she weighs 5 lb, 1 oz. and is doing quite well.
Many have also asked for an address to send cards. We are setting up a P.O.
Box for this tomorrow and will give you that information as soon as it comes
available. A member of Missey's local homeschool group is taking care of
this and mail will be sent in care of her. More details on this Friday.
Also check http://www.homeschoolblogger.com tomorrow for a tribute to
Missey. The outpouring of comments on her blog is just amazing
http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/HeartSchooling/92338/.
I feel like I am forgetting something, I will be gone a good portion of the
day tomorrow, but Lea is also around moderating and making sure that you all
have the latest.
May God bless and keep each and every one of you. |
