I know that Mary Chris helped me out with this question in the middle of a previous topic, but I can't find it quickly through a search. Help! I'm grilling steaks for my dh's bday and will purchase the steaks later on today. What steaks are your favorite to grill? Do you do any special marinating? Rubs? Anything? Thanks!
Love,

I don't have a favorite steak per say, but we do have a new favorite marinade - KC Masterpiece in both Original and Smokehouse. Very easy to use and tastes GREAT!
We had the Smokehouse last night on boneless skinless chicken breasts - yummy!

Rib Eye - yum we usually only do salt and pepper on them.. I grew up having steaks that way and would just as soon not cover up a good steak with other stuff.. since we get them so rarely.

We like to saute sliced portabella mushrooms and vidalia onion in butter, then plate the steak with the mushrooms on top.
Dh loves A-1 steak sauce.
Ds, who's a chef, uses Montreal Steak seasoning when grilling.
My mother always bought strip steak.
My fil, who was a butcher in his early years, always chose t-bone.
We just get whatever's on sale and offers the most meat for the best price.
Happy Birthday to your dh.

Thanks, all! Are there any steaks *not* good for grilling? Can I assume that when I look at a package of meat and it looks like a steak, it will be tender when grilled?
On sale at one store is: chuck steak, New York strip,
Love,

umm no you can't assume they'll be tender.. chuck steaks probably the least.. new york strips are good (rib is still better )
But you can grill the less tender steaks for things like fajitas just slice them across the grain after grilling.

Like Jodie, I'd go with the New York Strips, but if I were able and I were getting ready for a special occasion, I'd splurge on rib-eyes. Rib eyes are our favorite grilling steaks!
You're looking for good marbling - in other words, you want to see some fat running through the meat. This adds flavor and juiciness to the finished steak.
Our favorite marinade - this will marinade 4 steaks in a large ziploc bag...add one bottle of Zesty Italian seasoning, (I'm not sure on the amounts of the following...we just add...maybe 1 teaspoon + or -) salt, pepper, garlic powder, Tony Chacheres cajun seasoning (you can find it in the salt and spices seasoning of the market), and a 1/2 cup worcestershire. Close ziploc and leave in the fridge until time to grill. Melt in your mouth YUM!!!

yes steaks are one place where less fat in the meat is BAD.. you want the fat cut thin around the edges but lots of marbling.
Too bad you weren't closer.. our local store is having a great sale on rib eyes.. I'm still trying to figure out if I can manage to get some for the freezer for this summer.

Porterhouse are wonderful.
Unfortunately, I am now allergic to beef and can't eat steak anymore.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI
Forgot to add, we usually don't usually add anything to the steaks. Just make sure grill is hot when you put them on, and then turn down.

My dh grilled the BEST strip steaks for mother's day - just a rub down with some salt and pepper - and he brought them to room temp before putting them on the grill. YUM!

Hmmm...interesting...
Has your dh always been allergic to beef, or can he say how the bison compares to beef? There is a restaurant near my dh's office that does carry assorted game meats. Thanks for the info!!! (I admit, I was quite the baby the other night when my men were all enjoying their steaks, and I had a cereal bar. )
God Bless,

Angie, thank you so much for bringing up this topic. Dh has a very rare three day weekend, beginining this afternoon....we're going to be working on garden preparation and celebrating the feast of Sts. Isidore and Maria de la Cabeza. I've been wondering what to prepare for meals in the midst of it all....I think steaks will definitely be on the menu tomorrow evening! Off to ask hubby to pick up steaks on his way home! Thank you again!

Here I am again, looking for steak support for Father's Day...so I thought I would bump. My dh found a mom and pop shop meat market so we're eager to grill!
Thanks again and any other words of wisdom about grilling steak is always welcome
Love,

Looking at kabobs this year.. a decent round steak chunked up and marinated in soy sauce will come out pretty yummy without the cost of the nicer steaks.

Hope you had a great grilling! It was funny to see this bump again. It's good to see you are consistent every Father's Day
And I see I have never jumped in...
We really like tri-tip for grilling though I can't always find it and it isn't usually on sale but since it is less expensive when I can find it than other more "premium" steaks it isn't too bad to purchase.
I found this funny blurb that describes it:
Quote:
This little known sirloin cut is fast becoming popular because...
it's sirloin tender
it's sirloin flavorful
it's relatively inexpensive
it's sirloin! |
