Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello Ladies,

This is our first year hsing and I'm starting to plan for next year. My son is in the 2nd grade and just completed Saxon 2. We are planning to follow the MODG curriculum next year-- for the most part

MODG starts the younger kids in Abeka and then goes to Saxon. I think the reason being: use the mastery approach first and then spiral later? We had no problems this year... so should I switch to Abeka for 1 year and then switch to Saxon 54 or should I just keep on going with Saxon 3?

Will not having the mastery approach at the beginning make his basic understanding of the operations less strong?

I have my dd10 doing MCP level D this year because I knew she was not strong enough to do the Saxon spiral method. Although, we may try Saxon 65 next year... or math-u-see... or teaching textbooks... Any opinions?

thanks,
Lynette

We didn't use Saxon until 6/5, but I would tend to stick with Saxon if it's working for him.   What we did do is a variety of different math books in the early grades.   Each approached the problems from a different angle, and seeing it a variety of ways helped to give my dd a good foundation.   Why not use Saxon and supplement with a math workbook?   Just a thought.

I'd stick with Saxon. I started this year with Saxon 2 for my second grader, but didn't like it for the younger grades (I had 4th grader using Saxon 54 and and a 5th grader using Saxon 65, and while I wouldn't say I "liked" it, I felt that it was more useful than it was in the younger years.)

But that said, if you used Saxon for 2nd, and it worked for him, I'd stick with it. I was recently at an Abeka fair, and I was underwhelmed with the repetition of types of activities in the workbooks, especially the Math.

For your 10 year old, I'm not sure. Like I said, my 10 year old used Saxon 54 this year. She did use Math U See last year, and I wish that I had just stuck with it because she is a more visual learner and I think that she would have grasped multiplication and division easier if I had done used Math U See again, but she did o.k. with Saxon too.

I'd stick with what's working for you two until it's not working anymore.
