Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i have used sonlight's la for 3 years and it has not been a good fit for my boys. this year, i switched to chc's la (grade 2) and my son loved it. a friend of mine is interested in learning language arts through literature (llatl) and i'm wondering how it compares to the other two programs. has anyone tried any of these? I'd love to hear you opinions about these programs. Thanks!

Mary,
I have never used LLATL but one of my close friends purchased it for her two daughters and was less than impressed with it. My overall impression was that it was very simplistic and hard to use. I remember looking online for reviews of it and finding this to be a thought reflected in the reviews. Just my .02 from someone who never used it!

We used it for our oldest for a year or so - depends on what you want. You dictate from the book (they have excerpts from stories, Bible, etc.) and one piece at a time is dictated (one line/one stanza depending on the age). Then you go over grammar concepts with them. It all depends on what you like.

I didn't find it hard to use - it just got very old after a while. If you use it as a sort of clue to what the dc already know and then what to focus on, it works OK. Some of the later books, I am told get a bit anti-Catholic or at least inappropriate for Catholics. We never used beyond the red book.

thank you for your input. I'm planning on using chc's la - it's been a better fit for us than sonlight, and i suppose, if it ain't broke, . . .

I am using LLATL this year. I am ready to pitch it out the window.

BOOORRRINNG!

I don't find it difficult, just tedious.

The first grade edition is a lot of work and I ended up abandoning it shortly after starting. My first grader was already a fluent reader and there was no way to adapt it to that.

CHC and Seton both have really nice LA materials.

I am using the Blue book with my budding reader who is almost 6. So far he and I enjoy it. I was not prepared for Sonlight's core 1 (and nor was he) and this seemed a step down from that and a good bridge from kindy to real school.
