Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My fourth child, dd 9, is the first to show a strong interest in the visual arts. She loves to paint and draw and is very creative in these media. At the moment I am holding off on any formal teaching and encouraging her just to express herself.

At what age is it a good idea to begin more formal instruction?

What books or courses would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Jane.

Jane,
All three of our doaughters had art instruction from the age of 5. It started with dd#1 and the need to develop her fine motor skills. Just like big sister and because they were so fond of the art teacher they all began at 5.
I do not know if that is an appropriate age but the girls have been willing to experiment with color and technique.
The teacher was open to all their attempts and gave some loose instruction about shading, object placement, or whatever the focus of the class was.

This more relaxed class wored for the girls through middle school (dd#1 and #2, #3 has other interests so left class last year)
Dd#2, who has an "artistic" bent began more formal lessons in high school, before that she was not ready for its rigor and just wanted to keep drawing and painting. But in all things dd#2 proceeds at her own pace
Not sure if it helps, just our experience.

Jane,
Two of my daughters show great interest in art and have, in the past, taken lessons with Viv's daughters (above ).

This year, Clara is 8 and has begun weekly private art lessons. She has been drawing daily, on her own, since she was very young. She loves the private instruction...it's the highlight of her week. She just completed painting a garden scene that is beautiful. We took it to the frame shop yesterday to be framed. She glows when showing anyone what she has done. I plan to hang her picture in our living room .

Jane, I had a discussion about this with an artistic person (I'm most definitely not one of those!) when I was working on the lower levels of Mater Amabilis. She felt that around 10 was a good age to start. I bought a 4th-6th grade book from Artistic Pursuits to use with Rachel this year. I like it a lot, as it includes both instruction (drawing, in this particular volume) and picture study, and is easy to use. Having said that, I don't think we have picked it up since early pregnancy nausea hit! If you like I could bring it to Aylesbury for you to look at.
