Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone celebrate Fat Tuesday? Our celebration used to be with the church and it was sort of a mini-New Year's Eve celebration with the tooting horns and blowers, plastic bead necklaces and crowns, plastic coins and, of course, food.

This year, as we're moving, we decided to move our celebration home. We're having Italian Tortellini Soup and talking about what special things we're intending to do for Lent (see my post below; I need help with that one).

So what do you do on Mardi Gras?

We are having Overnight French Toast with all the trimmings....whip cream, berries, sausage and a King Cake for dessert ! I may run into Michaels and pick up some craft foam and feathers to make masks. I have some beads and purple and green napkins to make the table festive.
My kiddos love Fat Tuesday!

After lunch we're going to make paper plate masks, and talk about Lent starting tomorrow.

Tonight we'll have pancakes for supper ~ with whipped cream and mixed berries and hash browns on the side. Then an *early* bedtime so we can get up in time for 7 a.m. Mass .

I found it interesting that I-Hop (International House of Pancakes) is calling this National Pancake Day!

While the boys were doodling on their masks, I was cleaning out our fridge (what a sobering experience THAT is ) and found a log of sugar cookie dough that will expire soon ... so I am baking up some cookies, and will frost them purple and green .

The boys won't know what hit 'em ... pancakes, fruit AND cookies for supper! I hope they can get to sleep with all that sugar running through their veins .

We always have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday - over here it is always known as Pancake Day, so I guess that is where your pancake place got it from. I think the idea of the pancakes was to use up milk and eggs before Lent? Our pancakes are the thin, flat kind like French crepes. I was horrified to catch my 7yo stuffing a pancake with a mixture of grated cheese and vanilla ice cream. I like savoury pancakes or sweet pancakes, but a mix of the two?

Yes that's the idea and we had pancakes this morning too BUT the big treat of the day (Ok we had some yesterday too) is fastnachts! Oh my goodness are they delicious! We had a dozen yesterday and 2 dozen today. Timothy was home over the weekend and went back to the seminary yesterday evening so he got to share in them, but today he called me in distress to tell me that he had searched every local grocery store and no one even knew what fastnachts were!
It's a PA Dutch treat that apparently isn't common in Philadelphia. Poor kid.

Excuse my while i go have another fastnacht with my tea. . .

We enjoyed paczki this morning. Paczki (ponch-key; the "o" is a long o sound) are a Polish tradition and are sort of like a doughnut. Some are plain and some are filled (love the custard!). They are much heavier than a regular doughnut. We buy ours in a Polish neighborhood and one is quite filling. The idea was to use up all your eggs and butter making them.

For dinner I think we might have pancakes. I just realized that there isn't nearly as much ham left from last night as I thought!

Living in Louisiana, we have been celebrating Mardi Gras for week now! We have all the beads I can handle.
A friend from South LA sent us a King Cake mix, we are having that for dessert tonight. The kids are all reading fighting about who is going to get the baby!

Wow! You use three pounds of Crisco in this recipe?!?!? But then I've never deep-fried anything in my life outside of a work situation. I worked in a fudge company through college and for some reason I remember making doughtnuts there as well. I never liked doughnuts or fudge as a result of working there.

It sounds like you all celebrated much more than we were able to this year which is great! I do wonder what it's like to celebrate Mardi Gras in Louisiana. Did you all see the artwork in Magnificat last month? It depicts Lent in a battle with Mardi Gras.

Happy Ash Wednesday everyone!

Forgot to mention in my last post that I completely forgot about having pancakes yesterday. It never was a good idea before. I must be the world's worst flapjack flipper. I mix the batter (into which I often put bananas, applesauce, oatmeal, brown sugar). Dh flips them. My husband wasn't there in the morning to flip any pancakes. And he doesn't like pancakes for dinner.

So we compromised. We have a soup full of sausage, zucchini, carrots, and tomatoes (Italian Tortellini Soup) or Jambalaya on Fat Tuesday. We are winding down on having *any* food in our house since we're moving at the end of this month. I noticed that we have two more packages of sausage. We'll have to make split pea soup one nonfasting/meat-able day.

Maybe we'll start a tradition of pancakes next year for breakfast. My first ones are messy, but who cares? They all come out the same in the end. I'm curious, Kahtryn. What are savory pancakes? And how in the world do you stuff a pancake?

Oh, but we were seated right away (at around 10 am) and served plenty of pancakes...no crowd.

the funny thing was trying to find an IHOP. It seems that several have been sold but keep the menu. the first one we tried (and we have been there before) was now called "Sisters HOP". I guess that would make it SHOP. After that, there was no end of discussion of possible variations...all the way to the REAL IHOP!

We make flat pancakes (like French crepes), then put a filling in the middle and roll them up - kind of like enchilladas. Savoury ones would have a cheese or meat based filling, though we usually only do cheese; sweet ones would have some combination of fruit, ice cream, whipped cream, syrup. Sometimes we just sprinkle them with sugar and lemon juice and then roll them up.

In Hannah's case, she filled hers with cheese and ice cream. I stopped her before she managed to top it with whipped cream!

Ooooohhh, those sound yummy! One more pancake question, Kathryn. How do you make them roll-up-able? I don't think I'm picturing French Crepes very well. I've got some sort of American pancakes blended with tortillas on my brain. Can you post a good recipe?

TOO MUCH PACZKI!! We had wayyyy to many here on Tuesday! We buy ours from the Polish Village here too. We used to live there, and one year I took part in making them, which was pretty cool.

I had seen a notice about IHOP's free pancakes and we have a local IHOP, but we overslept and dh was busy putting the form down for our new carport.

We did make the country Mardi Gras and the city parade. I put pictures at my blog if anyone wants to view. We live in SW Louisiana. The police here and society do not tolerate bare-breastedness or anything vulgar. Things are pretty tame and friendly...like when your 4 yr old gets hit on the head with Mardi Gras beads, lots of people come up to you and load her bag with their treasures.

At the country Mardi Gras, we even saw a fully-habited nun and she was not in costume. Only in Louisiana.

I attempted mailing a King Cake to a friend.
$44.00 airmail! UPS won't send food except overnight because of food spoilage. I knew this friend would not want me to spend that much money so I send her beads and a King Cake recipe instead.

Bumping...

I'm so bummed that IHOP doesn't do their "Pancake Day" on Shrove Tuesday anymore - haven't for the past few years. They pick some randon Tuesday in Feb. or MArch. What is up with that??

So what is everyone doing this year?

We're having Mardi Gras colored pancakes, and kings cake "doughnuts" with Mardi Gras colored sugar. I put together a blog post with Mardi Gras ideas if anyone's interested in checking it out.
