Any ideas for high school science besides Apologia? My dd is doing a biology course from MODG that she absolutely hates. She also did their Natural history which was a bit better in her opinion (I think its well done). She does not like texts for the most part. I like the looks of Friendly chemestry but its expensive and does have a text in addition to the hands on stuff. She likes earth science but I won't try another MODG science course for her. She also likes animals. Any ideas?

Lisa,
Why don't you check out MacBeth's Opinion for high school science? We currently have The Way Life Works checked out of the library and it looks pretty good. We're waiting on a shipment of sheep parts to dissect which will be done with my dad since I don't do dissections.

My high school dd loves animals also so I have her do research and papers on animals of her choice. She also does a Vet Science project for 4H.

Hey Lisa!

We have never used a textbook for biology, and I really don't care for Apologia anyway .

I would take a subject she enjoys and let her run with it, doing the research on her own topic. If she likes animals, she can get all the genetics, anatomy and physiology, etc. from her in-depth study of that animal.

I have not seen Friendly Chemistry, but I have just picked up a copy of The Joy of Chemistry. While I am enjoying the overall content, we had to take a black marker to a few lines in the preface and introduction comparing this to another "Joy of..." book (no, not cooking ). But once you get past that silliness, the book is brilliant, with clear explanations, plenty of hands on work, and a shopping list that's quite doable. For more quantitative chem, we have used the hard to find Camelot Chem Primer...not a text book, but a work/text/comic book sort of thing.

For earth science, we have used The Practical Geologist and a roadside geology book. Look to local geology to do the hands-on stuff. For a history of geology as a science, Seashell on the Mountain, a secular (but very good) account of the life's work of Bl. Niels Steno, is fascinating.

Gwen,
What a great idea, my dd alos loves reading about animals, probably time I also got her to do papers on her readings.

I was interested to read your opinion Macbeth on apologia. We purchased it this year as our first text, I believe Chiara has read half a chapter. Actually it was a big debate between Apologia and buying some books recommended on your list.

We wasted a bit of money on a couple of texts this year. I guess its all learning experience.

MacBeth,
What kind of projects do your children do for these kinds of studies? After they've done an in-depth study do they simply narrate into their notebook, do a science fair type project or a report?
