Are map workbooks necessary or do you provide many maps for the kids? Our oldest is in second grade, in Cub Scouts, with hopes to become an Eagle. I know he'll be getting map skills with some merit badge eventually. For now, he likes the world map and country map, and sometimes browses the atlas.
Have you found the standard map workbooks to be necessary for your kids? If so, at what level do you begin? Or is there one book that teaches all map skills that a person can use as needed?

I used a map skills book from CHC for ds. He liked it OK, but not much. What he really LOVES is his book 180 Days Around the World. It gives a list of 4 clues to a mystery location, each subsequent clue narrowing it down further. Ds must USE atlas, maps, history books, internet, whatever resource he needs (usually an Atlas)to find the mystery site. From this approach he has REALLY learned how to use these resources, as well as WHICH resource is approriate to use, and has thoroughly enjoyed it. After the location is found there are also ideas for further study on that location, and they are usually very good.180 Days Around the World

My kids love their map workbooks. I buy the kind that have a real map (I hate the ones with made-up places) on each double page and a bunch of questions.
I think they're helpful for us because they cover types of maps I never get around to like annual rainfall maps,etc.
They also may be somewhat helpful to those who have to do standardized testing. I know a lot of the stuff from those books was covered back when my kids went to testing.

Hmm...good question. I am never very good at judging grade levels/ages. I would think it would apply to a wide age range, with adjustments for how independantly the child will work. How about I just post an exerpt and you can judge for yourself:
Location#1 Clues:
1. Lions, elephants and leopards are tourist attractions here.
2.The country's chief rivers are the chari and the Logone.
3. This country is a landlocked African country that spans three distinct climatic zones.
4. This country's flag has three stripes-one blue, one yellow, and one red.
Activities:
1. Enlarge the outline of this country on a piece of white paper. Using magazines or newspapers, cut out pictures that represent this country and glue them inside the outline.
2. A mandala is a drawing inside a circle that is basically composed of geometric figures. It focuses attention on color and design, rather than on reality. Create your own elaborate mandala and do some research to see if you can discover the origins of this type of art.
We do this once a week. Sometimes we do the activities, and sometimes just find the location.

Our copy came yesterday....and we LOVE it, too. What a cool book. My kids love anything that includes mysteries or clues. Thanks so much for the recommendation !!!

I'm glad you like it! Ds and I just did a re-evaluation (we do this quarterly) of what is working and what is not. This book is one thing he said he wants to spend MORE time on! He wants to do more of the activities, which we have been neglecting, and he has carved out an entire afternoon of his weekly schedule for it!
