Do any of you know any stats on the risks of pregnancy after multiple c-sections? My midwife told me today that it was very important to avoid pregnancy for at least eight months post surgery, and although we NFP reliably my husband is very concerned about the risk, and is suggesting celibacy until we're out of the danger months.

I know of several women who have had 5 or 6 c-sections. I think it depends on the state of your uterus during each c-section. They recommend that you give the incision time to heal between each pregnancy, but other than that, as long as your uterus is still strong then there shouldn't be any additional risks.
Would taking a refresher course for your method of NFP help to put your husband's mind at ease? If you chart correctly and have a reliable instructor, then total abstinence shouldn't be a necessity. If he's still uncomfortable with the regular rules for NFP, then could you just use the luteal phase, and add an extra day to the count down as an extra precaution?

I've heard that this is very VERY effective because you've verified that ovulation has already taken place enough days prior that the ovum couldn't still be surviving.

I agree with Jodie... I think that if you use the most conservative and cautious rules of NFP, you don't have to be celibate for months. I've personally had 6 c-sections and know of many others who have had 4 or more. And no, I've not given up on having more babies yet, either.  At least that's the question that I get asked all the time by those who don't know me very well on the street...
Anyway, my OB told me after live birth #5 that my uterus looked the same as if it had been the 1st c-section. (Scar tissue is cut away and it should heal nicely in normal situations.) I made him be sure to get that down in my records!

Thank you. I'm hoping that I won't ovulate for months- my new baby is only six weeks old, and with my last baby I didn't ovulate for nine months- but my husband is still nervous.

Has he taken the class? read the books? for NFP? With an infant under 6 months if you're doing ecological breastfeeding, when you haven't had any cycle the chances of getting pregnant before a cycle is incredibly small.. almost NIL. And as long as the baby isn't getting other food that only goes up a tiny amount after 6 months.

I have had 3 c-sections, and am now preg with #4. My OB, who is not into NFP said after my first cs that "the record is a woman in Texan who had 10" and that the uterus heals in 1 month when we asked her if we should be cautious of getting pregnant. She received us with great joy and happiness when we came back in to see her. I have a feeling that I am one of the few of her patients who hasn't gotten fixed after my 3rd pregnancy. I also know that she is quite well respected within the local medical community. So, she has not given any indication that we should avoid future pregnancies, etc. Peace.
