I know there was a thread a couple of weeks back (?) about abridged versions and adaptations. I also tend to shy away from those, but some picture book retellings of classics are very well done and I think worthy of a read aloud, or gentle introduction to younger children. (For instance, I do like the kid versions of some Shakespeare classics -- so when they're older and ready to tackle the originals they're not as intimidated!)

Anyway, I think

Marianna Meyer's retelling of The Prince and the Pauper is one such book. The illustrations are just beautiful, by Gary Lippincott.
