Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Next year I want to do some spelling with my 2nd grader, but nothing too intense or expensive. I'm pretty sure that I want to use Spelling City.

My biggest issue is coming up with the word lists themselves. I know I could try to make them on my own and program them in, but with a new baby coming that may just be more work than I can handle. I am also concerned with making the words somewhat grade appropriate. From what I can gather most people's spelling level is behind their reading comprehension level.

I am already using Spelling City to make her a handwriting worksheet using the Dolch word list. I was thinking that we would continue doing the handwriting worksheet every Monday, but make the list of words her spelling list for the week. Then I would have her do two or three learning exercises over the next three days followed by the text on Friday.

Is anyone else using Spelling City? Where are you getting your word lists from? How are you using them?

I'm really trying to avoid buying disposable workbooks for spelling--partly for cost and partly for variety since we already use workbooks for a few other subjects.
I looked at Sequential Spelling (as mentioned in other spelling posts). I thought it looked really neat but I think the mistake-based program would not fit well with my oldest daughter and I don't know if it's worth the money just to have the lists. Also, I'm unsure how to best use it with Spelling City.

I browse through the availabe lists (just check out Grade 2, or 1 or whatever looks suitable). I also use the lists from the Blue Backed Speller (available online), from the Writing Road to Reading (often at the library) and from Sequential Spelling (on my shelf!). If you look on the Seq. Spelling website you will find how he makes up the lists- you could look at a phonogram or ending sound you want to work at with your child then insert it into his method. (For example: say you are working on 'in'- you can go from in-pin-sin-spin-shin etc. then the next day you go with the plurals pins-sins-spins-shins etc. inserting some sight words or homophones in for the words that don't work to add s to, then the next day you could go with pinned-sinned-etc. He explains it better than I do, obviously!, so check out the site.

That's interesting list Angie Mc. That's giving me some food for thought.

I did find a few possible lists through Spelling City that some other schools had put up. I'm thinking I might test her on some of their first or second grade lists to find out where we really would need to start.

Barbara, thank you for the introduction to Spelling City...what a great resource! If you don't mind my asking, are you a premium member, or do you find that the free versions are good enough? If you are a premium member, what are the best features of that version?
