Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you were stranded on an island with only 10 or fewer picture books, which would you choose and why?

Love,

I would bring along some of my favorite Jan Brett and Tomie de Paola books, to start.

The Holy Twins
Tony's Bread (well, would I be sad with no flour on my island? or happy with my panettone memories?)
The Mitten
The Umbrella

I would also drag along my childhood copy (#2, I wore out #1) of The Brimful Book, which has nursery rhymes, lovely poems and animal stories.

Most importantly, I'd take an illustrated childrens' Bible.

Yes to Jan Brett. I'd also bring Peter Spier, my ds11 loves his books. I need to think of some other favorites.

Seven Silly Eaters
The Little House picture books by Renee Graef, at least a few,
A few of my Books for Little Catholics
Blueberries for Sal
Mother, Mother I Want Another- one of our all time favorites!

Hmmm, too many books that I wouldn't want to be without pop up in my head. Guess I'd swim for shore...

On any given day I might answer differently...

Tomie dePaola - The Clown of God
Eric Carle - Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Jan Brett - The Night Before Christmas
Patricia Polacco - Luba and the Wren
Robert McClosky - Blueberries for Sal
Marcia Brown - Stone Soup
Audrey and Don Wood - The Napping House
Peggy Rathman - Officer Buckle and Gloria
Don Freeman - Corduroy
Ludwig Bemelmans - Madeline

ETA: I would choose these books because they represent our favorite authors and illustrators, are favorites of all my children, and show a broad range of emotions and thoughts to ponder.

I'll swim with you, Maddie!

Love,

This is a cruel, cruel question. Akin to asking "Which children would you bring?"

My list would include

The Empty Pot
Joseph Had a Little Overcoat
Blueberries for Sal
Island Boy (personal nostalgia here)
A Hole is to Dig
Pascual and the Kitchen Angels
The Miracle of St. Nicholas (gotta have a Christmas title right?)

What??? Only 3 more????

NO!!!!!!!!!

We Were Tired of Living in a House (original Doris Burns illustrations)
Fritz and the Beautiful Horses
The Easter Story (Wildsmith: only because we should have an Easter story too...)

1. Bonjour, Babar! (the Babar treasury)
2. D'Aulaire's Greek Myths
3. The Real Mother Goose
4. Mary Engelbreit's The Snow Queen
5. The Golden Books Treasury of Christmas Joy
6. The Tasha Tudor Book of Fairy Tales
7. Eloise Wilkin Stories: a Little Golden Book Collection
8. Jesus (Brian Wildsmith)
9. Snow White (Barrett & Poole)
10. The Holy Twins (dePaola)

You see that I've tried to get around the "ten books" rule by including several treasuries we own.

Oh gosh, Ellie. This was tough enough to think of and now you've got me pondering Christmas and Easter titles, too? Ugh! Can we be stranded with at least 15, then?

Is there a D'Aulaire treasury? OK, silliness aside:

Mary's First Christmas ~ Walter Wangerin
Peter's First Easter ~ Walter Wangerin
Abraham Lincoln by D'Aulaire
All The Places to Love ~ Patricia MacLachlan
Make Way for Ducklings ~ Robert McCloskey
Hilda Crumm's Hats ~ Linda Hendry
A New Coat for Anna ~ Harriet Ziefert
Henry and the Mountain ~ Mark Taylor
The Raft ~ Jim LaMarche
The Napping House ~ Don and Audrey Wood

I agree with Angie. My favorites could change tomorrow, but not by a huge margin. We have favorite authors/illustrators. I see Officer Buckle above. We also like Steven Kellog's Pinkerton, Behave. I would list multiple books of each if I could and I just noticed that I didn't even MENTION Jan Brett. I didn't mention other favorites, either: Barbara Cooney and Marcia Brown! I believe I'd go down with the ship hugging all the books to me and sinking like an anchor. It's impossible for me to choose just 10!

Oh, Tina, I can just see you going down clutching the books .

Ellie, as I read through your list, I wondered if you would list We Were Tired of Living in a House - I remembered you raving about it earlier. It was a favorite of mine growing up!

OK, my list - hard to narrow down - and likely would be different tomorrow, too (or yesterday for that matter, before your suggestions influenced me )

The Little House - Virginia Lee Burton
Snowflake Bentley (or other Mary Azarian book)
The Miracle of St. Nicholas - Gloria Whelan
Pasqual and the Kitchen Angels - Tomie DePaola
Song of the Swallows - Leo Politi
Earl the Squirrel - Don Freeman
Make Way for Ducklings - Robert McCloskey
Peppe the Lamplighter - Elisa Bartone
Peetook - Caryll Houselander
The Story of Ferdinand - Munro Leaf
Rain - Peter Spier

oops, that's 11..but whose counting...

Angie,

I picked this book up from the library this week on your recommendation. My husband had not seen it and came home yesterday with the story of a coworker who broke her arm because she fell out of a swivel chair!!!

I couldn't believe it, showed him the book, and he's going to pick up a copy to take to work and have everyone sign for her.

Oh NO!

It's funny..."Never stand on a swivel chair" is one of our family's inside jokes.. You would be amazed how often is comes in handy .

Can't narrow it down.. but want to add something that hasn't been mentioned.

Around here somewhere I have a collection of Eugene Fields poetry.. it has the Sugar Plum Tree and Wynken, Blynken and Nod, and The Duel and well just bunches of them. And a cute one about a bird that sings fiddle dee dee..

And I love some of them.. my grammy would read them when I was little (I think I (or my sis) have an audio cassette she recorded for us of her reading some of them too).

But I was thinking how that book would be so nice.. I find his poetry very engaging and lots ot imagine in them.
