Is it ok if my ds does NOT wear a suit or dress coat for his FHC?
He has a nice tan pair of slacks, nice button down dress shirt and a tie....
We don't even own a suit, dress jacket because our parish has a very relaxed dress code and if I buy one it will probably never be worn again...he is our youngest son..
What do you think?

In our area, most boys don't wear a suit or dress coat. The recommended attire is either navy blue or black pants with a white button down (short-sleeve) shirt and a matching tie, depending on what color pants you chose.
It's just too hot and humid!

a jacket is certainly not required here.
I got my son a white dinner jacket (he wore it with black pants, white shirt and colored tie) for a couple of reasons.
His older sister had just gotten her special dress the year before and he really REALLY wanted something special of his own.. and he's our oldest boy so I have hopes of using it again for the other boys. And I got it on ebay so it was under $20
I just found it funny how the girls go around telling each other how pretty they are and how they love this or that.. and the boys were busy comparing who has clip on ties and who had tied ties (don't think they were saying one was better.. just seeing who had which)

I would ask around and see what the other Moms are doing. Our dress code here was a long sleeve white dress shirt with navy tie, navy pants, and dress shoes. Most of the Moms here were borrowing and passing around jackets. Is there a family there that could lend you one if it is neccessary? How about the Godparents, could they help with the costs?

My son was required to wear blue dress pants with a white shirt and tie. That being said, the boy in front of him wore an all white suit and some of the other boys had blue suits. I would ask the priest or DRE to see what is expected at your parish.

My sons both wore a jacket, but it was given to us by a friend. I passed it along after we had no more use for it.

Our youngest wore a jacket, purchased years ago from a garage sale, that two older brothers had also worn for FHC (it was in mint condition when we bought it; since it was only worn for the seller's son's FHC; it still looks like brand-new and will be handed down to grandsons). He was the only boy in a jacket...the rest wore dress pants, dress shirts and ties, in varying colors....everyone looked fittingly dressed for the occasion. Our parish really focused on having suitable dress, without burdening families with exhorbitant costs.
This brings to mind a very thoughtful idea from dd's parish....they have a lending closet of FHC dresses, which I believe are also used for May crownings. What a wonderful assist for families who may not be able to afford expensive, one-time-use attire. It would be such a lovely idea for other parishes to establish a FHC clothing closet...how much nicer to have such items being shared than gathering dust at home.
