Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In my search for quality Catholic oop books, one of the clinchers for me to purchase a book is finding the Imprimatur and the Nihil Obstat on the inside. I know the book is sound if it bears those statements in a book, that "nothing stands in the way". Nowadays, I don't see that as often in new Catholic material. It always makes me pause before I purchase a book as I am a convert and am still learning much about my Faith.

For example, the Patmos book A Child's Missal does not have either the Imprimatur or Nihil Obstat, I was reluctant to use for this reason, but I did purchase it as I could see nothing that was against the Church in it, but I would be reluctant to use some material in my home to teach my children with, without some sort of declaration that the material is without error.

Can someone tell me if it is no longer required to have some sort of declaration from the Church to publish a book on the Faith? Maybe I just don't understand it correctly...

Thanks,

Maddie, I understand! The teaching on what needs to be marked with these is in Canon Law. This was revised in 1983, so some things might have changed.

Code of Canon Law
TITLE IV : THE MEANS OF SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND BOOKS INPARTICULAR (Cann. 822 - 832)

What was most helpful to me is this CUF Faith Fact: Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur which describes what types of books needs the nihil obstat and imprimatur, what it means, and explains how not every "Catholic" book requires this.

And Jimmy Akin has a post that responds to this question as well.

Oh boy...nothing is ever black and white anymore. I had totally misunderstood this process. Thank you JennGM and MaryM for the clarification.
