I'm having trouble healing up a cracked knuckle on my right hand. I've used Neosporin with a bandaid at night and on and off throughout the day, but I can't keep it covered long enough to really heal. To top it off, when its been covered for awhile, it get super itchy, which probably means its healing, but I scratch at it and it gets worse. Now, I've got two more knuckles that are starting to follow suit! It really hurts, and its been like this over a month.
Any suggestions? I'm long past moisturizing-- it stings to do so!

Most OTC lotions have alcohol and stuff in them which is why it stings. Something that can protect and moisturize without those additives would likely work.
You could try plain oils like coconut oil or even olive oil, maybe aloe.. again get this from the health food store, should be refrigerated without any additives.. or buy a plant and use it right from the plant.
We use this herbal cream for all sorts of cuts, abrasions, rashes etc. It's usually pretty gentle and things heal up VERY well when using it.
One last thing (that I can think of right now).. honey can help heal wounds really well.

Instead of using moisturizer, maybe try a plain oil like coconut oil? I don't even have lotion anymore, I just use a bit of it when I'm dry. The nice thing, though, in your case is that you could put it on thicker and it would act sort of like a barrier too. It also has healing properties. Olive oil could help too, but it isn't as "thick."
I also once got a cotton glove as part of a kit for moisturizing. I've never used it, but I've used socks at night to cover up slathered feet for intense moisturizing. You might try a glove at night and even in the day to protect your hand as well as keep whatever oil you are using concentrated on the injured area.
That sounds so painful! I'm sorry you are dealing with this!

A & D ointment and then cover it with the cotton glove? Hope it clears up soon; this is very uncomfortable.
Peace,
Nancy

Anne,
When my family has trouble with cracked fingers/hands (seems to happen more in the winter), we increase our water intake along with oils/lotion. We tend to drink less water in the winter, even though we need just as much as in the summer. Might help.

One of the ointments we've used successfully is Bag Balm. It's made with lanolin. Some people don't like the smell. It didn't bother me.

I have this problem as well. It's at its worst in the dry cold months of the winter.
I use Badger Balm and have had good success with it. The key is to keep it in my apron pocket and every time I sit down, rub a little more on my knuckles. I make sure to try to apply once every couple of hours, and then at night before bed I apply generously. Someone mentioned lanolin and that has worked well for me before as well.

I think you may be on to something with the Lanolin, Helen and JodieLyn. The coconut oil did nothing, but I put lanolin on before bed-- it felt great, but I was getting it everywhere I'll try that some more.
Thanks for the tips!!

Oh I'm glad something is helping.
Even if you don't have gloves you could put socks on your hands at night to keep it from getting everywhere.
oh, I know, you know that gauze that sticks to itself? you could use that to lightly wrap your knuckles with the lanolin on to keep it in place.

My ds gets crackled knuckles/hands every winter. I put A & D ointment on them and then a pair of old socks and he sleeps like that. It always clears it up.
