Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok ladies please offer me your guidance...
This is our first year HSing. My 2nd grader finished CHC My Catholic Speller Level A and my 4th grader is 2 weeks away from finishing MCS Level C.

What should we do now? Both breezed through with no problems. I have MCS Level B because I was worried the 2nd grader would breeze through....

Do I call us done for the year on spelling?

Should the 2nd grader start Level B but not finish before the end of this year? Or the 2nd grader could use his Wordly Wise 3000 words as spelling to complete the year?

Should the 4th grader use her Wordly Wise 3000 words as her spelling words until the end of the year? Or is she just done for the year?

I guess my question is: what do you do when a subject gets done early? Does it depend on the subject? If this was math-- I think I would just do math games or fun review until the summer break.

Thanks!

Lynette

When something gets done early, we allow greater focus on other areas, and continue to require the skills learned. For some things my son will go to the next thing anyway because he wants to. Otherwise, we just spend that much more time on other subjects ;)

Lynette, how wonderful to be near the end of one of your subjects! Enjoy the success of completing a book.

My mind is a little sluggish today and I can't remember if it is a Laura Berquist idea or a Charlotte Mason idea... I remember the recommendation to allow children to enjoy their new found learning. Give them time to relish their achievements. In modern schooling, a child is rushed on to the next subject and idea without the time to enjoy his success.

In Karen Andreola's A Charlotte Mason Companion, she has a very pleasant chapter on Spelling called "The Servant Spelling." (I've read this book over and over for many years.) I remember her outlining the CM recommendation of keeping a list of misspelled words. If you're inclined to keep something going with spelling, this could be a simple way to achieve your goal.

CHC describes Speller A as "advanced 1st grade, average 2nd grade" (and all the following levels are described the same way). So I think if you wanted to continue on to Speller B, you wouldn't really be going "off course." Not that being on or off course necessarily matters anyway. No opinion on what you *should* do.

When we finish a book, we just open the next one.
