So, in recent months I've been receiving formula samples and coupons, baby gear brochures, and even a baby feeding questionnaire in the mail. I'm assuming that my ob/gyn office informed someone that I am pregnant, because the stuff started coming before I ever stepped inside a Babies 'r' Us or any other maternity store that normally adds you to such a list.
Well, today I received a flier for Essure permanent birth control procedure.
The whole thing just disgusts me. I knew that my office was pro-artificial contraception, but I felt dirty just receiving that thing in the mail. Plus, the procedure itself seems really creepy.
The flier plays on a woman's fears with questions like, "What if I got pregnant again? What would we do? Will I ever stop worrying?" Correct answers: Have a baby. Have a baby. Not until you die.
And their slogan is: "Your family is complete. Your choice is clear." I find that slogan very offensive, like it's trying to tell me that my family is complete instead of asking if I think my family is complete.
And I think I'm wondering if they are targeting me because this is my fourth baby. Apparently this procedure as been around for six years and this is the first thing I've received about it.
I find it more annoying because I did have an unplanned pregnancy, but now our "best surprise ever" is almost two years. Just another example of our anti-child society.

Yeah ... we heard about this while watching the Winter Olympics ... pretty sick, huh? Makes it sound so wonderful and family-based and it's really just a form of sterilization!
Sorry that you're getting these ... I'd pack it all back in the postage repy envelope (with my address deleted) and send back to them! The USPS makes them pay a fine if the prepaid envelope weighs more than what they paid ... I do this anytime someone solicits me via snail-mail!

Great idea, Mary! I think that would send a loud, clear message.
Barbara, I don't blame you for being upset. I would have been, too. I was completely offended by the Olympic ad campaign (that, of course, my children saw as well ).
Do you think it would be appropriate to write a letter to your doctors' office, telling them how upsetting the mailing was and asking them to get patients' permission before passing along mailing addresses (or worse, selling them?) to outside companies?
I don't imagine that they are targeting you personally. I am guessing that the medical office has provided patients' contact info to some marketing firm that recently added the offensive "procedure" to its list of PR customers. (Ick.)
I feel this way because I get a lot of PR emails (many each week) via my work-at-home job, and some are so completely unrelated to what I actually do that I wonder if the senders can actually read English.
I'm sorry you've had to go through this stressful experience.

There was a phone number for “more information” when I got a similar card. I called....and told them how utterly offended I was by receiving this in the mail, and to get me off of their list NOW. I briefly said how we are Catholic, and explained how I would never use something so awful.
I figured if nothing else, maybe the girl answering the phone might start to think twice if she heard from more women like me, and quit working for the Dark Side.

I tore up the card and threw it in the garbage. But I am going to say something to my doctor's office. It seems to me like giving my name to a PR firm should be a violation of HIPAA. They basically gave my medical information to someone without my permission.

You have a good point, Barbara. I wonder how that is legally possible?
(And I would have set the card on fire, I'm guessing. Ewwww.)

I did the same thing. The person on the other end offered to take me off the list immediately and never contact me again before I even got the words out. I think they hear from a lot of people about this. Hopefully, they'll get the message.
