I was looking at how my son was standing without shoes and he really needs arch support.. and he needs new shoes too..
What would be good brands for a boy for running shoes and dress shoes with arch support.
Or what is out there that you can add to a shoe for arch support without getting them custom made etc?
ETA - no where in town for me to go and look and ask at specialty stores or anything.. so I'll need to look online without a special trip of at least 130 miles one way.

Well, for sizing a child in specialty shoes, you can't beat Zappos. Free shipping and a killer return policy means you can order multiple styles in multiple sizes, try them on at home, and send back the ones they don't work/fit.
I'm not sure about arch support in kids shoes. My favorite little boy shoe is this pediped because it wears well for out of home play (we keep wellies for backyard play) AND church, but we don't play sports yet, and I'm not sure which son you are buying for.

oh oops this is actually the oldest son.. and he's right between boy's and men's sizes.. or rather in that blank place where many places don't carry large enough boys shoes or small enough men's shoes.
He's in a men's 7.
I suppose a running shoe in a women's 9 might work.. there's some rather generic (gender neutral) looking ones.

Well, I would look at Zappos. You can shop by gender and size and sort by price.

Jodie,
My fellas like Merrel brand for support! You can find this brand in all styles and sizes, and I often find very good prices at our local outdoor store.

Jodie,
Is your son Flat footed? If he is, My husband has had just about every running shoe out there (he ran hurdles in High school and loves to run in general) and these are the three types he's had great luck with
Brooks The Beast These have the ultimate in support and you can place any insole into them.
Brooks Addiction These are great too but not as much support as the beast.
And just recently we bought these New Balance AMAZING SUPPORT!!!! I cannot state enough what a difference it has made for my hubby!
Good Luck, this age is tough for shoes, I remember my brother having huge issues finding the right shoes at that stage too

Thanks Mimi.. I did a bit of looking online (thanks to Lindsay sending me to Zappos and they had stuff about this shoe being for over or under pronation etc) and that might be what he's dealing with.. I just know I can see that if the inside of his foot was lifted up and supported his ankles/legs/knees would line up more properly.
I was showing dh and he's got a call into the local sports medicine place to see if they can check him just so we know better exactly what we're dealing with and what we should be doing to help.
He twisted his ankle just a bit yesterday and I was checking his ankles today for swelling and noticed as he walked away (without shoes on) that his ankle looked funny.. and since the boy needs shoes anyway...

Jodie,
If there is a Fleet Feet anywhere near you it would be well worth the trip. My oldest dd was having serious foot issues. She has an extremely over-pronated foot (means she basically walks on the inside arch of her foot rather than on the sole of the foot). She needs very, very good arch support, especially when doing large amounts of walking.
The folks there took over an hour to work with her step, analyzing it, filming it, showing us....then recommending shoes, filming her stride again. Amazing difference!!! I really appreciated the time they took. Based on the fitting, they recommended only certain shoes with really great arch support for her. Beyond that, they helped me know what to look for in shoes outside of their shop (they're primarily athletic shoes)...so a church shoe, a sandal. We were so pleased with the experience and learned so much. I noticed a huge difference in her stride once she was wearing well-fitting shoes that addressed her over-pronation.
Anyway...don't know if it's a possibility where you are, but it was such a huge help for us and such a relief for my dd, I thought I'd mention it!

I need a fainting emoticon.. it looks like the only one in Oregon is in our nearest large city (that's not so near.. requires a special trip and planning and setting aside money to do it etc) But so much easier than if it was over in the Portland area or Boise or something like that.

All I can recommend are New Balance, as that is all my boys, excepting one, can wear, due to their extremely long and wide feet. The staff there are great at helping my flat-footed giants! But we are nearing the end of their shoe-range, so I need to start branching out. I am going to keep these recommendations in mind for my guys!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

thank you everyone.. your information helped me find more stuff online (runner's world has lots of good info)
And then we were able to get into the sports therapy clinic and verify that what was going on is what I thought it was..
And I've ordered some shoes for him.. ouch on the cost.. but way better than waiting until he's injured or something from not supporting his feet properly.
