Can anyone suggest a DVD series about American History? This would be for my kids in the elementary grades. I'm thinking about how "The Magic Schoolbus" DVDs are a great science resource. I'd love to find one for history as well.

We've always enjoyed Liberty's Kids. Here is the complete set.

These look great! Good price, too, for the set on Amazon.

Thanks Paula! My oldest son used to watch that on PBS, but I haven't seen it in a very long time!
I'm looking for something that could work almost like a spine for a very visual learner. He absorbs so much from visual sources. From what I remember, this series was pretty accurate, would you agree?

My girls LOVE Liberty Kids! We've also found some DVD biographies at our library. I've looked on Amazon to link but couldn't find them. The series is the Animated Hero Classics. Our library has several on various historical figures.

Are these them Bethany? They're a bit expensive. I might check our library for them ... although our library isn't the greatest.

Becky,
I was just wondering the same thing, except for other time periods.
We bought the Liberty Kid's set, and my boys loved it. Now I am wishing there was something else? I can't recall any other history series made especially for children. Does anyone know of any?
I guess I should go search the history section for movies, but, golly, it sure would be nice to have more child-friendly history series. Maybe some of our budding history majors/videographers could make this a project for when they "grow up."
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

We've enjoyed the Schlessinger Media history videos we've gotten from our library. The two series we've watched have been "Colonial America for Children" and "Ancient Civilizations for Children." I believe most of the videos are 30 min. or under and aren't too dull. The only thing we didn't like is that some of them (not all) were a little "cheesy." It's worth checking to see if your local library has these on its shelves.

Yes, those are the ones Becky. The cover at the library was a little different. I wouldn't pay that much for them, they were good, but not THAT good! I've also seen the Schlessinger Media that Valerie linked to. I think we've only watched the Ancient Rome and Greece ones. They were also pretty good and have many different time periods covered.

Bumping this up...
Liberty Kids is on sale again at Amazon for $31.99 for the complete 40 episode set.
I missed the last sale and have been waiting and waiting for a good price again. I think this one is going to be set aside for my ds for Christmas....

Our family * hearts * Netflix! I missed the first "sale" on Liberty's Kids, too, and was just about to bite the bullet and buy them anyway, because I just love them, when lo and behold they appeared on Netflix! Hope they stay there for awhile, though...

Yikes- does Netflix have things and then not have them? We have very limited Netflix (2 per month).... but I like the idea of being able to have and use the dvds whenever I want.
My library does not have them... not even a single episode!

Netflix has things that occasionally go on and off the "instant view" option, but I've never seen things go off the "check out" list. We only have one out at a time for that option, and with a hubby, an 18 yr old, a 12 yr old and 3 littles (plus Mommy, too!) we have a lot of requests for the "check out" movie! So I like it when things are available instantly...we have a Wii that can stream them straight to our TV, which works well.

Do you know approximately how long they stay on the instant view? I thought it was permanent...

I don't think there's any set time, Robin...lots of things seem to be on there forever, but every now and then when I peruse our "instant queue" I see a note on the side stating that it will only be available until such-and-such a date. I think unless you remove it from your queue then, it just goes to sit on your "saved" list, and then when it's available again, I think it automatically goes back on your "instant queue".
There must be some licensing issue involved with rotation of availability, royalties or something maybe? Dunno.

I want to thank you for the recommendation of "Liberty's Kids". Our library had the whole series, and we really enjoyed this. I only had a few reservations, but overall very accurate.
My boys are acting out the War for American Independence this summer. It's amazing how they can imitate the French accent of Henri.
