Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Looking back to when I was a kid, I remember reading Dr. Suess, the Berenstein Bears, Clifford, and The Bumper Book.

I missed out on so many authors- writers I never knew about until I had my own children. I think Tasha Tudor is one of my now favorites that I missed out on. A Time To Keep
is one of my very favorites. I love the pictures and the way the children spent their days.

So, I'm curious... which authors did you all miss growing up? Which do you remember well?

And it's funny.... my mother assures me that she and my older sisters all read to me for hours when I was little, but I find I have very little memory of it, though I do remember one book I disliked then and still dislike intensely: "Mother, Mother I Feel Sick". Icky 70's picture book

Oh yes, so many!

Robert McClorskey (sp), Tasha Tudor, Margaret Wise Brown, CW Anderson to name just a few. I can relate to the '70's picture books. I was so pleasantly surprised as a mother to find picture books so pleasing.

When I was young, I was often given a quarter when my mother went to yard sales, I would ALWAYS buy books. (or green peppers if it was a flea market...) We had one solitary shelf at the top of the stairs that I filled to the brim. I do remember one artist I loved as a child, Eloise Wilkens. I collect her books now and just love her sweet pictures of children.

I think that I was born at the right time...and I was blessed with a mom who loves poetry for children. I was raised on classic children's poems and had a lovely anthology called The Brimful Book that had three sections - nursery rhymes, poetry (with Tasha Tudor illustrations!) and animal stories (nonfiction). We wore the book out (Dad tried to save it with packing tape, but...) and I now own copy #2 from my childhood.

We missed out on Jan Brett books when ds was young, but happily found them through 4Real when dd was little and ds could still appreciate the whimsy, beautiful art and humorous twists in her stories. We bring out our Jan Brett library every winter and enjoy her work as winter approaches.

I must confess, I've been a book fiend since age 4 (Mom enrolled me in a Dr. Seuss book club...I still have all the books that didn't fall apart from over-use!). If I read about a book in another book (e.g. Edward Eager's characters talked about the Betsy-Tacy books...I looked for the B-T books and was instantly hooked), I always sought out the referenced book. Authors pay homage to the writers who inspired them. I still read books for young people - not only dd's books but also new books at the library. My friends know about my obsession and recommend titles. If I read a book for middle schoolers and can't put it down, I "accidentally" leave it out and tell dd about it. (Then I pay the price, as she stays up late to read!)

I didn't have any books by any of the author's mentioned. What I did read was Trixie Belden and Cherry Ames. My mom said before that is was a lot of "see Dick run."

I read Nanvy Drew, Trixie Belden and Cherry Ames as well, Paula. I thought Cherry was so exciting... I loved reading about her at nursing school.

Also, I had a few with Eloise Wilkins illustrations (I Go To Kindergarten was my favorite).

And we were a RIchard Scarry house- I have found memories of Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm.

We had a lot of Golden Books and Sweet Pickle books, I still have my old obscure Richard Scary which is one of my boy's favorites (Babykins and His Family).

One book, that I am so glad we kept (some of my favorites were lost--I don't think my mom realized which ones I truly loved) is Cranberry Thanksgiving. I loved that book and it is exorbitantly priced used! We had quite a few from this publisher that was apparently some sort of 70s book of the month club. Most of my books were picked up at flea markets by my PawPaw (who was barely literate himself).

I missed out on much of the more beautiful books. No Tasha Tudor here either .

I also started reading chapter books fairly early, so I, too, read a great deal of Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon, but while there is nothing wrong there, I also wish I'd known some of the books like Betsy-Tacy. I read voraciously and would have read GREAT books voraciously had I been properly directed.

That's how I feel... there were so many, like Betsy-Tacy and All of a Kind Family that i would have loved- if I had known about them. But the older authors- McClosky, Virginia Lee Burton, Margaret Wise Brown- they just weren't around at all.

But, luckily I am enjoying them as an adult, thanks to this board.

I don't remember any beautiful picture books. But I do remember with fondness the Richard Scary, Sweet Pickle and dinosaur picture books that my brothers and I shared. We read Dr. Seuss and Berenstain Bears too. It wasn't until children that I read Beatrix Potter, Robert McCloskey, Winnie the Pooh, Brambly Hedge and so many others...Better late than never!

I had never heard of Margaret Wise Brown until my oldest was born. Now, we own several of her books. Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge books were seen for the first time, shortly after my third child was born.

I've been thinking about your question for days. Like Janette I really don't remember any/many PBks. I know we had a few Golden Books in the house, 'The Poky Little Puppy', was in that collection, which I loved.

But don't you think there were far less picture books when we were children? Well perhaps when I was, I'm 38. (I have a suspicion you are younger ) Our home abounded with books, thousands of them but they were mostly chapter books. We only had a small shelf of Golden books. And I don't really remember PBks at school either.
