Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anyone ordering chicks from a hatchery this year? Its been a while since anyone mentioned chickens or chicks on this forum, as far as I have seen.

We do flock replacement each year and I am excited to say that our chicks are coming in 2 weeks. We are getting some of our old favorites: ameraucanas, sussex, australorps, and then some that are new to us that my kids picked out- buff Brahmas, Blue Andalusians, and Ne Hampshires. Fun!

This year one of my sons is ordering some crested breeds that he will keep separately from the regular layers as we know they are not compatible with non-crested breeds.

Last year we did 50 meat birds of our own. It was so hard but a great experience!!!

Anyone have any thoughts on your favorite breeds. What are you ordering?

We have 175 cornish rock x coming in a couple of weeks. We lost a lot of hens this winter (one old one died; 5 got killed by a mink - we saw it!) and we sold our Australorps (except the one who escaped) from last year because they ate so much and were not any better layers than our black stars who did not go broody (the Australorps did).

We picked out Black Stars and Rhode Island Reds from the farm store for my MIL's new flock. I am waiting for May 1st to order some Golden Spangled Hamburgs from My Pet Chicken (they have a minimum order of 8 for rural customers - if you're within 1/2 hour of a major city you can order 5 and if you're IN a major city you can get a minimum of 3!) I was thinking of trying Blue Andalusians and Appenzeller Spitzhaubens, too...we have two Silver Lakenvelders left - I love the fancy little free rangers. DH is only on board with the Hamburgs, though.

Ours arrived March 18 and all 30 are doing well. They are our first flock and we are quite excited! My husband and son are converting a stall in the barn into a chicken coop. We decided to try multiple breeds this year to see which we like best so we can order more of it next. We have some Hubbard Golden Comets, Columbian Rock Cross, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Production Reds, and Red Cross.

God bless,
Christine
