If this ends up too long,PLEASE revise it to just say that I'm requesting prayers for Matthew who had an accident on Tuesday.....
Anyway, I met Matthew when I first became involved with my parish. His grandmother had just received custody of Matt & his brother as their parents had serious drug problems. He was in 3rd grade, a chubby, joy filled practical joker. We didn't click as I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm not into practical jokes.
On a beautiful spring evening when Matt was in 6th grade, Matt & his brother begged Grandma for permission to play ball after dinner. Grandma initially said no, but caved into their pleas. Unfortunately the devil was about and Matt had a nasty encounter with a semi truck. The parish prayed and prayed for his recovery. He spent months in a coma and months in a rehab center… After he got out of rehab, the amazing thing was his attitude. He would share with anyone who would listen that God thinks we are all beautiful people and the fact that he is still with us is a miracle. How could people not believe in God when they have a miracle in front of them???? So much for looking down on a practical joker.... I’m embarrassed to admit that under the same circumstances I doubt that I would have the same attitude.
Anyway, though Matt has recovered he still has numerous physical problems. He is VERY blessed with his grandma who continually fights against people attempting to classifying Matt as having a mental defect. He had an amazing recovery and for about 5 years was able to walk with a brace. Unfortunately he is now in his 20’s and attending college and his health appears to be regressing. He is having MAJOR problems with his gait and difficulty controlling his arm movements. He has two speeds. Stop and racing but he can’t hold his balance walking normally. The doctors feel that he needs assistance to walk normally and will work with his decision regarding having a cane…. a crutch …. or a wheelchair as the assistance. He doesn’t want to hear it. He has learned how to walk without assistance and he is not going backwards.
As he is racing forward attempting to hold his balance, he tends to fall and last Tuesday at college he crashed into the plate glass window at the entrance to the college and is currently in the trauma center at the hospital…. So sad They had to do an operation to remove the glass shards…. So very sad!!!!
PLEASE lift up our gift of God in prayer!!! that he will continue to be a source of joy for our parish and that he will feel comfie wherever God is calling him to be.
Thank you soooo much!!!

What a beautiful story and a testament to God's work! I am deeply touched and am glad that you wrote the whole story. I will happily add him to my prayers. I can't imagine how terrible his accident must have been to have to surgically remove the glass. Praying mightily for him and those who are caring for him, for recovery and for wisdom in finding a solution to his walking problem!

Thank you ALL for your prayers!!!
Visited Matt at the hospital with members of the Youth Group today... He is in pain. The Doctors are amazed at how well he is doing and feel that it is a miracle that he survived the bleeding from the injuries that he experienced
God must have some sort of plan as this is his 2nd miracle!! Thank you Jesus!!!
Also it was very surprising that members of the Youth Group who haven't always been charitable to Matt's problems were the ones who participated in visiting him. Go figure!!
Matt is hoping that he will be released from the hospital on Holy Saturday, but currently is TOTALLY non receptive to the fact that he will have to use a cane.
I’m praying that we can come up with some sort of cane that he will view as acceptable, but am doubtful as he insists that a cane does not help..
St. Matthew pray for Matt..

I'm sorry to hear that Matt is in pain. I hope his doctors will listen to him carefully and work with him to help him manage his pain.
It looks (from my perspective, anyway) as though part of God's plan is evincing itself in the lives of the young people who know Matt and want to support him right now. The compassion they feel for Matt will, I pray, grow within them and help them feel a calling to help others over the years to come.
I will pray for Matt this week, especially tomorrow, and pray for his caregivers and medical team, so they can all work together to give Matt choices that will work for him and help keep him safe.
Thanks for the update. I'm so glad you told us about Matt.

Oh, this is wonderful news! I am still praying for Matt (and Grandma - she must be such a loving and caring person...). I am so thankful Matt can be at home during this holy weekend.
It is a privilege to pray for this courageous young man and for his loving grandmother.
