Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I feel the very strong urge to share these thoughts (truly prayers) that have been bubbling within me the last couple of days.

It would seem that most of our society today is self-centered, inappropriately exalting themselves above all else.

But then there are those who go to the other extreme, making themselves so lowly that you STILL can't see God within them!

And then there is the place where God wants us to be. Exalting HIM within us; taking care to minimize ourselves so that HIS Light shines through - but utilizing and maximizing the talents HE has so carefully and prudently chosen and placed within us to USE for the world - for HIS GLORY.

I feel that, as children of Mary, the woman who physically held the Light as He grew within her, we have a calling to live to certain standards. I fail miserably most of the time, but I have heard the assurance in my heart that there are certain things I am doing RIGHT - that I need to cling to.

I just know so many people that self-degrade ALL. THE. TIME. They make themselves so lowly, in the name of humility, that they actually do far more damage than good. People who don't care what they look like at all because they want to be so lowly and be forced into humility. And it passes to their children. To the point where you don't want to sit with them because, well, they smell funny. I have worked with the truly poor, those who have no/limited access to proper sanitation - and I can take their smell, because that is what they have - but they have an inner dignity, because they KNOW that they are children of God.

But when it comes to those who have access to sanitation? How could anyone demean themselves SO much when they have God within them? My heart aches for these people.

Please see my blog post: Living as Children of the Light

I would love to hear other people's thoughts, either here or on my blog (I get so much spam - I would LOVE to get more real comments!)

Yes, virtue is the mean between extremes. It's a hard place to find! Our Lady is such an example and she is also a comfort as we seek to find the Lord. She is our sweetness and hope in this quest for perfection.

I looked for "false humility" in the CCC but didn't find an entry so I turned to one of my favorite dictionaries, Fr. Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary. In his entry on humility, he writes:

wrote:
Yet humility is not only opposed to pride; it is also opposed to immoderate self-abjection, which would fail to recognize God's gifts and use them according to his will.
