I am planning on continuing Right Start this fall with my first grader, but I read Maryan say in a thread somewhere (I don't recall whether it was recent or an older thread I was looking at) where she keeps workbooks for the days mom can put in the necessary face time.
I know Right Start is a little different in the order in which it approaches certain concepts. Which workbooks have people found that they like to use? If history is any indication, I will likely be pregnant (and ) during this school year, and I'd love to have a crutch on hand, lol.
I looked at Calculadder which looks good to me, but I thought those experienced both in supplements and maybe Right Start too would have a favorite to share for those times.

I laughed to myself when I read "math supplements" b/c I was thinking in terms of vitamins. I wish there was a math supplement I could give my dc that don't like math !

Wouldn't that be nice. "Here, mom doesn't have time to teach you math today, just take this pill instead..."

Well, I won't recommend the one we bought this year!! They were all over the place. I just looked at Amazon for something cheap... and well, you get for what you pay for!
We've used Abeka, and they were fine... but they were too much for what I wanted this year. I'm looking again. Basically, all I are practice drill sheets on the days we can't get to Right Start.
I'm thinking about just looking at Staples. I've seen little math workbooks there and they might be just the thing. But I still haven't found what I'm looking for. I'll let you know if I do.

I haven't used these for any ages other than K/1st and I haven't looked to see how they compare with the approach Right Start takes (I only have the Transition Lessons and Level D)...but we've really enjoyed Dorling Kindersley's Math Made Easy series.
I read Erin recommend them (on her blog I think) and then I saw them at Costco very inexpensively. I grabbed them because my little fella wants to do something *schoolish* like his older siblings. Cringing...what if they're the ones Maryan thought jumped all over the place.
Have you considered looking into something like Family Math, Lindsay? I see it's 94 cents used at Amazon right now. A dear friend was getting rid of her copy late this past year and I was lucky enough to grab it. I like it a lot! The activities are independent of each other, so you could look through and choose one that supports a concept from RS. And, I love that it is something we can all do together! Of course, it would still require your involvement somewhat, so it doesn't really fit the bill there.
Hey...I had an idea! What about just purchasing the RS workbook from the previous section? It would be a review, but at least it would follow the same basic approach? And, since it would be a review, you could assign a page without having to give too much direction. ?????

Jennifer those were the ones!! I didn't know Erin recommended them, it just came up under my search at Amazon. They looked fun and colorful, and they were $10, so I bought them.
I liked that it had the answers in the back so the kids could check themselves, and the stars to show them how much they accomplished...
But I didn't like how in the very beginning of a 3rd grade math book (p.21), they had division with remainders! I must be too simple in my math approach: I want first grade to be all about adding; second - subtraction; third - multiplication; fourth - division. Or if you want to introduce the others, it should be mid-year, end of year. And the first page shouldn't have remainders!
Both of these books in my opinion had these random advanced things pop up with no lead into the concept.
Also the pages were more "slick," so my boys had a harder time using their pencils on them.
But I was looking for something that I could say: Okay do the next page by.yourself. So these books weren't it for us.

Oh and Lindsay, we ended up with a computer game for multiplication reinforcement called Timez Attack. We don't have any other video games, so it was a huge hit. My dh doesn't like the little kids to be around because of the big ogre that JP needs to beat by hammering out his times facts. But that won't help you yet.

Aw, Maryan, you were supposed to lead me to the perfect source, lol.
MichelleQ has recommened MathDrills.com to me in the past. It looks like you could at least pick the concept you wanted to drill easily, and it is free!

We are using RS A & B w/our 5 y.o. & 6 y.o. respectively this year. When our 5th baby was born 9.5 weeks early, I ordered Horizons workbooks from Rainbow Resources. They're $12.75 not incl. shipping, etc. They've worked well for us and we're still using them on days when we don't do RS, even though concepts are intro. quite differently. I've found the side benefit of using Horizons is that it has helped to fill in a few minor "gaps" such as addl. practice in determining the sum of a given set of coins, telling time, etc.

Hmmm.. I'll have to look into Horizons. Did you find that your kids could work independently with these workbooks, Heather?

Maryan,
They do all of the Horizons work independently. The directions are pretty simple to read for beginning readers at the K level. We did already have 3 mos. of RS under our belt b/f we began Horizons. I think that that helped as far as being familiar w/some concepts.
The one drawback with our #2dd is that she will keep working in her workbook beyond what I've asked her to do, lol. But when I verbally check through her work with her, I am confident that she *gets* what she's done in the workbook. Our girls still LOVE RS & prefer it most definitely, but for the days when memory work or science take front seat, or our littles need me more, the Horizons workbooks have been a great supplement for us!
Also, the calendar/days of the week concept was grasped more quickly by my eldest dd via Horizons than in RS.

I just knew it! Hey - no biggie! It's actually good to know! I've only got the K/1st grade book right now!

We are using this for some summer practice...and I printed out some extras for fall. I really like how specific you can get about what type of problems you want.
I spent about 20 minutes printing a bunch of them with the answer sheets, and have several months worth of "back up."
