Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are reading Plain Girl and want a few extras to learn about the Amish.

Recommendations for Picture Books?
Movies?

I found this videoThe Amish: Back roads to Heaven, but our library doesn't have it. I requested it ILL, but DVDs always take much longer, so it'll probably be months before I see it.

It's been awhile since I've seen Saving Sarah Cain....has anyone watched it recently and remember any of the more sensitive-themes or parts?

Don't mind me, I'm just laughing at the phrase "Amish movies."

And the only "Amish movie" that came immediately to my mind was Witness.   Not one you'll likely be sharing with the girls...

Of course, there is Patricia Polacco's Just Plain Fancy -

Jane Yolen's Raising Yoder's Barn

Richard Ammon has a series of books on Amish life. I've only seen Amish Horses. The text is pretty long for a picture book. Goes through lots of details about Amish life - in this case how horses are a part of their everyday life. The illustrations are amazing, but you can see that from the examples.
Amish Wedding
Amish year
Amish Horses
An Amish Christmas

Did you ever get your library to order more of the Reuben books by Merle Good that were recommended here? Those would be good.

I've requested for review:
Down Buttermilk Lane
Just Like Mama
The Journey

I'll let you know...

Thank you, Mary!!!! You listed two that I was trying to think of the titles, and hadn't had time to search around. Down Buttermilk Lane is one we read in the Fall. And, Raising Yoder's Barn.   I requested all the Ammon books, Just Plain Fancy, and The Journey. We didn't have Just Like Mama. And, there were a couple others too, that look good.

And, no....they never did buy any more Reuben books....i'll have to request again.

And, Mary...did you see that Just Like Mama is by Beverly Lewis of Anneka's Secret Wish?

Good to hear! How did you get ahold of the Rueben books - did your library order them?
