Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am so hoping one of you will be able to help here. My dear sister has two children, both adopted and biological siblings with fetal alcohol syndrome. Her 14yo son was affected mildly and is completely normal aside from that he can get "glassy" looking. Her 15yo daughter is a complete mess. She is zoned out much of the time, can do well in school but then has weeks-long episodes of failing miserably, she lies about everything, even if you were actually present to see whatever it was, and in general she just doesn't care about anything. She can't keep friends. She is a superb gymnast and cheerleader (as is her brother), but doesn't even care if those are taken away. We love her so dearly, but the family is suffering so much. She repeated 5th grade, and now she's in danger of failing eighth. My poor sister is terrified at what the future hold for her daughter.

The school system (in Texas) keeps telling my sis that this is "typical teenage behavior", which I think is crazy. She's also heard that FAS can manifest severely at puberty, which it seems to be doing. Does anyone here have any experience with this? As far as completing eighth grade is concerned, I'm encouraging my sister to seek out a dual-enrollment option. She and her dh are spending so much time each day on math and science that they may as well just do it at home and get full credit for it. My niece can understand the work at home and then tank the test.

But more concerning is the social issue--no apparent conscience, no cares.

Sigh, please help if you can. Thanks!

Molly, what a sad circumstance, those poor children. They don't deserve their lot, and certainly didn't choose it for themselves.

I don't have any experience with this, however, I will be praying for your sister and her family.

Perhaps the girl would benefit from professional counseling? Youth counsel with experience in the area of FAS or maybe a Psychiatrist? I'm sure they've already considered that, or have even pursued it.

All my prayers to you and your sister's family.
