I'm just as ignorant. That's how I do it. And pictures do take forever to upload if their resolution is high too! 
(little thumbnails don't come up when I do it this way for some reason). Now, with my camera they ARE in huge resolution, so actually it's better for me -- in order to save space in my blogger photo area -- to upload them to photobucket once in a while and link from there.
