Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Over here I asked about ideas for nature hiking backpacks. My thought is that for Easter, instead of giving the kids candy (which does terrible things to my kids!) I would get them fun things to take when we go nature hiking. One item is a new backpack for each of them and I had the idea to use the backpack instead of an Easter Basket. I could even fill it in the bottom with "grass" , tuck in a few Easter eggs, etc. But ... is there something of significance about the actual basket that I would be missing? My dd asked yesterday where that tradition started and she thought maybe because it reminds her of a nest. (Eggs + nest ?) I didn't know.

Well, in America the significance of the basket is to be like a nest, with the eggs.

In European and Slovakian countries the custom of having Easter foods blessed before they eat, the baskets play a large role, and the lavishly decorated basket covers are a big part of this.

But the significance of the baskets is not the actual basket, but the timing of when it is given. Lent is over, rejoicing commences. We are celebrating the Feast of Feasts.

I think your little gifts, especially the "newness" fits more into the newness of life which Easter reminds us of. We get new Easter clothing and such to remind us of our baptism and Christ's resurrection, everything cleansed...

Just random thoughts...
