I have tried the homemade laundry detergent using the borax, fels naptha, and washing soda and my laundry comes out dingy. I added the Oxy Clean or the generic equivalent and still no dice.
I need to try something else. I have hard water. I would like something natural and as cost effective as possible. I hate chemicals and scented things drive my sinuses nuts.
What can I do now?
I have a HE front loader from LG and I am dreadfully behind in laundry as it is (I am currently awaiting the dryer repair guy as we speak) and I have to get through a huge mountain once the dryer is working again(hmmm...is that the right word?? what is larger than a mountain)
Help! I am drowning in laundry for 11 people (the babe in the womb counts as clothing just came in for him or her LOL)...besides that ...I can't believe that 'I' am doing laundry for 11! or delegating that amount. WOW!
Help...gulp!

Well I know what you mean about laundry for 11.. well almost.. I don't have any baby things out just yet.. I can wait until end of summer for that
I haven't made my own soap.. but I had good luck mixing half purchased detergent with borax. Less soap, more borax.. so I don't know if that would work with your homemade soap or not.. the borax is a water softener so should help with the hard water.. and less soap means it'll rinse cleaner.. oh.. and vinegar in the rinse if you can manage that? It'll help the soap rinse out.. sometimes the dinginess is because the soap isn't completely out and it will hold the dirt in.

Thanks Paula, yep.. due late September. I posted before.. just a prayer request.. I've been a bit nervous after our loss last summer. But I'm 12 weeks now and everything is going well.. so I'm not quite there but starting to relax a bit.
I don't tend to mention it often though so it's probably easy to miss.

Increase the borax.
I've never used the Fels Naptha, just Zote (another laundry bar). Also, try adding baking soda, and a white vinegar rinse.

I know you don't want chemicals but the best that I have found for our sensitive family is All Free and Clear. You only use a tiny amount, it truly is scent free, and I add borax as a boost when needed (usually because I forgot the clothes in the washer and need to run them again). It works really well on baby stains, as well as, mud caked clothes.
(ignore the amazon price, that is for a jumbo purchase)

Have you tried using Soap Nuts? This may be just the thing for you, it is about as natural and chemical free as one can acheive!
You can learn more about them here

So do we! I don't have a single complaint at all. When I first started using it my clothes got so much softer I guess because my old detergent was building up on my clothes. We use vinegar in the softener cup too.
