Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am sure many of you do book clubs with groups of children. I would like to peak into what and how you do this.

Ages?

How do you select a book?

How is the group run?

How often do you meet?

I am looking to start something like this for middle school aged girls. I want it to be more thought provoking rather then fluff. I have a vision of a group sharing insights and debating or just conversing on their different perspectives.

I am just not to sure how to do it! I need a mentore or just some old-fashion hand holding!

My teenage dd16 and her friends have a book club once a month. There are four of them, oldest 17 and youngest 13 (but she seems older)

Another mother and I approached the 17 year old to run and host the group after she started her blog because we felt she could do it. She is very quiet so it doesn't have to be only highly confident girls who can run groups

The girls choose their books themselves and decide how to run their meetings. Generally they talk about the book, their thoughts reactions etc. A couple of times they have also watched DVDs of the books they read during the month.

I share their list for this year as truly it makes me giggle to see what these girls chose to read. They all select a couple of books each. *The girls received this email along with the mothers

Hi everyone

Here is our book list for 2010:

Jan. (no book and no meeting for January)

Feb. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte*

Mar. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien

Apr. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

May. Christy by Catherine Marshall*

Jun. Mara Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw

Jul. Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte

Aug. The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

Sep. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

Oct. Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis

Nov. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Dec. (no book for December)

Books marked with an asterisk deal with some slightly more mature issues - nothing to be concerned about, but just in case mothers want to preview those books first, etc.

And just a reminder that we'll be meeting on Saturday 12th December, for some afternoon tea and (hopefully, if it arrives in time!) "The Young Victoria"! Look forward to seeing you all!

There are a couple good threads where members shared ideas about their books clubs with reading lists.

And Marjorie wrote a couple of great posts on her blog detailing how to run a book club. Great stuff there.

Also check out Charlotte's wonderful blog for posts she has done on their book club.

Bumping up an old thread!

Marjorie's blog is no longer available, but does anybody have suggestions for running a mult-age club? Ages of the kids are 5-13, and I'm not sure I could make this work without splitting into at least two groups, right?

We have this age span for our group. Depending on the activites, we do separate into two groups. Lately, though, I have noticed that we have been able to keep the group together for the majority of our time.

In our group, each mom thinks of an activity or discussion topic. That helps alot in lending to the creativiy of the activities.
