Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was thinking this morning (or was it yesterday?) that it would be fun if we can read books and discuss them. I think it is hard to do during the school year but I wonder if we can have a "summer book club"... We could
pick three books for June, July and August and discuss them. We could alternate fiction and non fiction.
We could start nominating books and then we could take a vote in let's say end of April or beginning of May. That will give people pleny of time to get the books by June.
What do y"all say? Any takers?

Sounds like a great idea -- I'm in. What can we do to get this moving?

Blessings (and happy reading).

I guess people can start suggesting books. Do you guys have a preference for fiction or nonfiction? I was thinking we could alternate.

I am thinking that we should be looking for books that:
- are complex enough to make discussion interesting
-are not too long so reading it in a month is possible.

Maybe there are some books that you have been meaning to read and haven't gotten around to; or a book that you read about somewhere that you think will be good, or a book that you have already read that after you finished you wished you had someone to talk about it with.

I was thinking that we will keep this open for suggestion for the next few weeks. After we have a list we could take a vote. What do you guys think?

I have never done this online before so if any one has better ideas don't hesitate to speak

Blessings,

natalia

I've been away from the forums for a few days, so I apologize for not jumping in sooner. Natalia, I'm so glad you posted! Your suggestion is exactly the reason this particular forum exists.

We've got a running list of book suggestions at the top of this forum —I need to update it, but there are already a lot of good books there already. Early on, several people expressed interest in a group read of KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER, so there's one possibility. But any other suggestions are welcome! Fire away!

{bump!}

I have to admit, I read Kristin Lavransdatter years ago and was underimpressed (I'd heard stupendous things)...does anyone have some other suggestions?

It's getting close enough to summer to start planning and scrounging for books.

If anyone's interested in revolutionary China, I went to high school with Lisa Huang Fleischman (and carpooled with her every day), author of Dream of the Walled City. My mom's book club finally broke down and read it; they loved it. Lisa went to China to meet her mother's family and interviewed her grandmother about her life during the revolution. Lisa's grandmother knew Chairman Mao and told an incredible tale, which became the basis for this book. Ironically, while in China, Lisa witnessed the Tiananmin Square massacre. Her father worked for Catholic Relief Services; that's how her parents met. Lisa, a federal prosecutor, wrote this novel in her free time (what's that?) and her style is lyrical and compelling.

Another idea: Reading Lolita in Tehran. I was not wild about reading this book (Mom's book club chose it; I inherit the books afterward!), but it hooked me immediately and I stayed up for two nights so I could finish it. It's a rabbit trails book for adults...the links between English-language literature and the lives of educated/oppressed women in Tehran are just astounding.

OK...your turn! (AKA, Tag! You're It!)

Caryn just asked about an Edith Stein book. I've never read any of her writings, so I don't have an answer, but maybe we could read one of her books as Summer Reading. There's an almost endless list of possibilities in the "Running list of book recommendations" thread, too. Are we after something that will help us grow spiritually and as mothers, or some fun fiction? Maybe we can narrow down the possibilities. I'm open to anything at all, as I haven't read most of the rec'd books.

Okay, Ladies, it is time to make a decision for our summer book reads. I have taken over as moderator of this forum ......so, I went perusing the topics........and see that it is time.

I think we should start with an Elizabeth Goudge book. Anyone in favor?

I have a recommendation for any of you who have not yet read Jane Austen's work.......make this an Austen summer!

Some way or another, I missed out on her books......until four years ago.......when I devoured them all. So did my oldest dd. We had such fun trading the books. I am reading a compilation of her short stories, written as a teen. They are SO, SO funny! I am really enjoying them.

I have ordered some of the Jane Austen mysteries recommended earlier in this thread.........the reviews on Amazon were surprisingly favorable.

I have heard only wonderful things about Elizabeth Goudge's books..............and have yet to read one. My oldest read a few and found them quite favorable.

What say you?

Let's plan to read one book mid-May to mid-June.......mid-June to mid-July.....etc........so we can be done before school starts.

God bless your weekends! I have a CCM friend coming for the weekend... ...can't wait to play with her!

Well, Chari, it will be winter here - but I am up for the reading!

We have recently watched Bride and Prejudice ( the Bollywood movie) and Pride and Prejudice and just last night, Sense and Sensibility. My twelve year old is reading Pride and Prejudice and I am starting Sense and Sensibility.

And I would love to re-visit some ogfmy Elizabeth Goudge books.

Sorry, Leonie, but you are definitely in the minority here...so, Summer rules!

you can keep your ol' man winter........in fact, take mine! I am so done with it! We have ANOTHER 10 days of rain to look forward to.......where is our sunshine???

Anyway......since you know Goudge's books......please pick which one we shall read first. I am really looking foward to getting started.

How about a Louis de Wohl book, or a Fulten J. Sheen book? I think it is good to stick with books we can get at our libraries, at least through interlibrary loan.

Rumor Godden books are good, too. Chesterton, or CS Lewis? Comments welcome........or I will get stuck choosing everything......which is okay......because I won't lead you wrong.......I always read good stuff!!

Leonie? what does "ogfmy" mean?? does it stand for something, or is it a typo?

I reread P & P and Emma just before Lent..........I do not reread too many books.......and these I had only read just a few years ago! Have you read S and S before? I love the last scene in the movie when Eleanor loses it    We just watched part of Emma tonight, sipping our rootbeer floats with our CCM visitors. MMMM!

well....my kids are not being nice to each other......time for bed!! for them, "I" get a hot bath!!

I recently read Scent of Water and would love to have somebody to discuss it with. But I want to read some of her other books.

Is there a way to set up a vote? I wonder if we could come up with a list and then vote.

Natalia

PS ogfmy? I wonder if it means something like old good friends of my youth?

I'd be interested in joining in on a discussion of Scent of Water, as I haven't yet read that one by Elizabeth Goudge.

Okay..........Let's read Elizabeth Goudge's Scent of Water first. Go ahead and start when you are ready........most libraries should have this.....let's try to be done by June 15th.,.......and then we can start on the next book.

As for the other books..........quickly give me all of your recommendations and I will make up a poll this weekend, I hope! oh, I have a Lebanese feast to prepare for Mother's day.......so, it will be hard to squeak it in......I will let the poll be open for a week......and then we will take the top two books for the other books.

I will also use the recommendations already listed....so you do not need to repeat those.....

Your humble and obedient servant,

What about Henri Nouwen? Anything by him would be good.

For fiction, has anyone read Peace Like a River by Leif Enger? Dh and I both loved it.
