Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wonder what your guidelines are for getting rid of your homeschooling books -- not the ones that fall into the category "curriculum", but books you might use for planning, or books about homeschooling, or books that might inspire a homeschooling mother.

I'm sitting here surrounded by piles and I keep finding books I haven't looked at in *years*. I open them up and I think, "Gee, why haven't I been using this book??? This book might come in handy..." Granted these books have been off in a relatively inaccessible bookcase due to lack of space, but still?

On the other hand, there is good stuff in these books and if I wasn't so darn "out of sight, out of mind" I'd probably be able to use them better.

I take them to the homeschool used curriculum fair and sell them or to my support group meeting and sell/give them away. Last time I brought a bunch of stuff and gave it away in exchange for a donation to a Haiti relief fund.

I rarely get rid of home schooling items and when I do I either sell them or they go up on bookmooch.

Practically; I'd first sort them into piles governed by their teaching style. ie. Charlotte Mason, Unit Studies etc. Then ask "What sort of teaching/learning best fits your family. Now I know you have a good handle on that so it should be quick to answer. So you can easily put aside to sell the ones that you bought back when you started out hs and now recognise as "not the best fit".

Then I'd go through the other piles and start asking the harder questions. Why has the book not been used? Aside form the fact that it was, out of sight/mind. Is there another reason.

You could also look at each pile that contains books that support your teaching/learning style but select the best. The ones that you would go to first.

A hard, hard task culling books

That'll be me in a few weeks, I'll come here for a pep talk too.

I'm thinking I can be a bit more ruthless now that I have some homeschooling under my belt. I think there are a few books that I've kind of "internalized" as much as I'm going to, like Charlotte Mason type books. I've read and reread about it, and if I have a question, there is always here and other internet sites, for example. I *do* use books like that to re-inspire myself, however, so they have been sitting on my shelf waiting for me to do just that. I need to take a hard look at whether I will ever get to them, or if I even *need* someone elses view of something to tell me how to teach MY homeschool. I seem to get in much more trouble when I read to much along those lines, LOL.

My oldest child is starting to tell me to keep all the books now, for her to use with her children someday.

Before, I couldn't pare down, now I am being told not to! Ack!!!

So, now what?

Angela,

As soon as I give away some books I find that I end up needing them and often re-purchase them!!!!!!!!!! I just recently gave some books away, thinking I would never need them, and then I ended up needing one. When I looked into the price for the book, I realized I had paid over $40 for it and could not bring myself to re-purchase something so pricey. See, I am so helpful, aren't I? I would think that if you have completely moved beyond a certain teaching philosophy, know for sure that you either don't like the book, the book didn't work for the majority of your kids, you pretty much "know" what the book is saying (as in teaching methods/philosophy type books) or if the book could be easily/cheaply replaced if you decided you DID need it after all, then I would go ahead and toss it. But, if you really enjoyed the book in the past or you think Child A or B might benefit from it in the future, then maybe box it up and store it instead and then if you haven't used it in a year or two, then get rid of it. I just speak from recently being "burned" by myself.

You might also check what your library has.. so that if you know you could get that book from the library if you needed it.. then you wouldn't have to store it or worry about needing it at a later date.
