Any tips, etc?

DD is starting K this fall with LSLF from CHC, and it's Phonics based. I strongly believe in phonics, and want to teach her phonics.

My problem is that I can't hear the phonics sounds myself - they all sound very similar to me. I had horrible ear infections as a kid when I was learning phonics, and didn't get most of them. Add in some hearing loss now due to thyroid issues, and I'm trying to teach something that I just can't hear.

Has anyone else had to deal with this? How did you do it?

FWIW there isn't anyone else around to teach them to her either - only other one at home is my mother who had a stroke 18mo ago and slurs her speech. I do have some of the letter factory DVD's but we haven't started those yet.

Leapfrog DVD Letter Factory is wonderful for teaching letter sounds. The kids love them. Even the older ones And even the toddlers can start answering the question about "what does the A say".

And Starfall.com is a website that helps teach phonics.

As someone who's has problems with remembering phonics myself, I've finally found something that helps.

Paying attention and noting mouth and tongue positions.'

I don't actually worry too much about phonics when teaching reading (other then trying to be as clear as possible when giving new words, or blending new words, following the instructions and letting the children work with starfall) but when the children are spelling I find it easiest to work on the relationships between sound and letters by noting how certain sounds are made with certain positions of the mouth and tongue.

All About Spelling sells a CD for the computer that pronounces 70 phonograms for you. My kids love to play with it.

I have a hearing loss myself, mild to moderate. To be totally honest with myself I do hear better when I put my hearing aids in. I don't have so much trouble with the phonic sounds, it is more the children's speech issues that I don't pick up.

Anita's suggestion of a CD is very good advice. This way you can be certain they have heard good articulation.

the Barton's system starts with a heavy emphasis on phonemics (which I had never heard of before) and concentrates on tongue/mouth positions. have you explored those at all? I imagine other programs must address phonemics as well ...
