Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have several of the secular DePaola books, but none of the religious ones.

I'm looking on Amazon at some of the religious based ones, and they are running $20-$30. That's a lot for a kids book IMO - I'm used to buying them 10/$1 at my thrift shop.

Are they really worth the cost? We're using CHC and I know they call for some of them.

They are worth it! But don't buy them all at once, and don't pay full price. Buy used (hardback if you can). We have used these for many year -- it's part of our rhthym now to know which books to read on feast days. And some of Tomie's are our favorites.

We can talk about which ones are better or loved more...

Also, look around at used book places. Addall.com and bookfinder.com search many different book databases, including Amazon, so you can see the variety. Bookfinder has a nice feature that can show the price with shipping, so you won't be surprised by added costs.

I agree with Jenn. DePaola books are definitely worth owning. They are the books that I and my kids reach for over and over again. Just yesterday we read The Holy Twins (actually written by Kathleen Norris) and my daughter has wanted Pascual and the Kitchen Angels every night lately.

That said, we haven't bought any of them ourselves. We've found several at used book stores here and there and then we also keep an Amazon list for family who want to buy books for the kids. We load it with the harder to find books like DePaola's and we have most of his Catholic titles now.

Dittoing Jenn and Susan. I bought all of mine used. It meant being patient, but the dePaola books are generally quite abundant on used bookstore shelves. It might be fun to search the archives here on some of the titles, make a list and keep it in your purse so that when you shop you have an idea of the ones you'd like to get most.

Dittoing everything already said:

They are worth every penny! But we've only bought 1 or two "new"; had a few given new as gifts; and picked up the rest at used book stores, thrift stores, etc.

Hardcover is much more worth the price - they will be treasured favorites. And even those that aren't absolute favorites can be passed along as gifts to others.

I'm agree! I score almost every time I go to the used bookstore and find another title in hardback. I started buying them before I had kids (concentration in Child's Lit in college) in soft back and those books are destroyed now Now I only buy DePaola books in HB. It is sooo worth it to be patient.

At the top of this forum there is a list of places to check when you want to buy used books. Book Depository and Betterworld books have free shipping all the time

Praying I find these at the thrift now - went this evening and got all the Strega ones & the Parables of Jesus for just .10 each with library binding. I see what everyone was talking about on the quality of the religious titles.

I think someone who donated was a Catholic Home Schooler, so maybe I'll be able to find the rest over the coming weeks.

I've bought mine mostly via Amazon. If I wrote a curriculum dePaola books would be the core. LOL.
Why are all the good books American?
Wish I could fly over the pond and visit these shops where homeschoolers leave loads of good stuff...

They are worth every cent.
I put them on my amazon wish list and watch them and hope for a deal.
Be sure to check the other versions thing that is sometimes at the bottom of the new/used box thingy......

My tech speak impresses even me sometimes.
