Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Not only am I knew to the forum but also new to Montessori. Having home schooled two of our older girls many moons ago, I am now embarking on a similar journey for our son Benedict aged 6.
Due to the complexities surrounding his medical care for type one diabetes, he has missed copious amounts of schooling and in particaular struggles with the maths side of things. I have bookmarked Elizabeth's Serendipity site and love the math gnomes! but would really appreciate some advice on suitable Montessori resources as another way of practically demonstrating concepts.
Also any suggested reading material for me!
Many thanks for reading, God Bless, San

San-

Here is a link to the early childhood learning resources page. If you scroll down, there is an extensive section on ideas and resources for Montessori.

Many Montessori concepts, especially math, are demonstrated in short videos on YouTube. That is a good place to start looking and getting a feel for how Montessori math works.

Many of us here have used Montessori ideas and have loved them. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Another program you might consider, which is Montessori-based, is
RIghtstart Math. Level A is kindergarten and is a very gentle, hands-on introduction to math.

When I was in your situation with a very sick child, I started using full blown Montessori math with my dc. After a while it became clear to me that I could not keep up with caring for a sick child and at the same time learn and present the math as well as make or buy all the materials.
RIghtstart has been the perfect solution for me... still so much of the hands-on Montessori concepts I love, but scripted and much easier for me to learn and present.

Welcome San!

I love Melinda's idea about checking out youtube videos for ideas in presentation! They're a great help!

Have hope! I was stuck and seeking help with a young student who desperately needed to learn in Maria Montessori's hands-on, child-making-the-connections way. Using ideas from Montessori, he managed to remediate and catch up on all his math in one year at his own pace!

I used Lori's Comprehensive Lists as a guide so that I knew what skills should be covered in what order. The lists have the presentations common in Montessori math listed in order of presentation. Beyond that, I found the Elizabeth Hainstock books a huge help for me in seeing how to present. There are two of her books worth seeking out for understanding the math presentations and materials: Teaching Montessori in the Home: The Preschool Years and Teaching Montessori in the Home: The School Years (out of print, but right now is available very affordable used). These books are so valuable to me in *seeing* a Montessori presentation.

There are some great presentations online that could help you along. One of my favorite sites is Montessori World Educational Institute. Here's their Beginning Math presentations.

You can find a number of resources to print for free at Montessori Materials.

Hope this helps give you some things to look at and consider! If you pursue Montessori, do remember that there is a learning curve for bringing this into the home! It won't look like it does in a Montessori classroom, don't expect it to! It can be a very effective and beautiful philosophy in the home, and I've seen amazing things happen in my home with my children when offering some Montessori opportunities. It is pretty mom-intensive, requiring some organization and management of the materials and methods. That time investment is mostly on the front end of the work though. I mention it because it seems overwhelming at first, but after a few presentations, my children worked very independently, so it was a time investment!! It's not an investment everyone can or should make though. Just trying to be devil's advocate in my own review.

Hope this helps a little. Welcome again!

Thank you so much both of you for replying, I will check out your links when I get a spare moment, LOL!!
Jennifer I'd checked out your blog via Meredith at Sweetness and Light!
I know I won't be able to replicate a montessori classroom, not with a toddler in tow aswell, but I do think Benedict would benefit from many of the practical applications.
Once again many thanks for the links
