Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For those who haven't heard, the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, will be on "Oprah" tomorrow, Tuesday 9 February 2010. In looking at the Oprah website, it appears that her show will focus on the Sisters and "Geishas." Each group will have their own times, from the looks of things. I don't know which group will be featured first. I guess Lisa Ling is the reporter who came their Mother house in Ann Arbor. Also, I think three? of the sisters went and were in Chicago for the interview with Oprah.

Teresa Tomeo (Ave Maria Radio-home) had a segment about it this morning. Also, for those local to Detroit, Vic Faust (who will be at our parish, St. Michael's, on Weds. to talk about his reversion to the Faith) will have bit on them on Channel 7 news tomorrow, too.

Not a big Oprah watcher, but I will dvr this.
(Oh, I don't know if this is on the show, but the sisters presented Oprah with a rosary, a how-to pray the rosary, and they invited her to personally visit them.)

God Bless,

Yes! We are so excited about this. I hope it will be on you tube, no TV here! These Sisters are just incredible.

This is very exciting. I have been so disturbed with the way Oprah has been promoting her new age stuff and leading so many astray.

Praying that the Sisters will be portrayed respectfully.

We attended an advent retreat and Sr. Andrew Joseph was the leader. She shared quite a lot about the order and my 9 yr old dd and I were so impressed. I was so grateful for this experience, as this is the only exposure my daughter has had to a nun in a traditional habit.

The Sisters did a week long summer camp here in my town in MI last year. Both my children attended the camp. We had a wonderful turn-out (around 200 kids!) They said we were one of their largest groups ever.

My kids loved the Sisters.... The kids were literally crying when the week ended.

I hope they are interviewed with love and kindness. They are a very special.

The theme is women with "hidden lives." I am definitely going to watch. Should be interesting. I hope most of the questions for the sisters don't all sound like "don't you miss men?! don't you miss s*x?!" sigh.

I hope so, too. Someone who posted to our local group said the promos made it look like that was a focus. They mentioned it as a caution when determining who you might have watch it with you. It's just such a shame that is what our culture focuses on. And pairing it with Geisha girls, definitely shows a slanted focus. But I would imagine that these lovely women will be able to address this well and shift the focus if it isn't edited with a bias. Joining in the prayers that it is respectful and is well received.

It really could be a good evangelization tool and I pray it will be. As Diana mentioned so much of what Oprah has promoted through the years is very New Age. Which isn't surprising because it is present in many places in our culture. New Age is so insidious. It's often subtle and uses language that sounds familiar and comforting. It has great attraction and appeals to the emotion and the senses - it appears on the surface to be natural, simple, beautiful - all things we are attracted to, but but separated from God, the true meaning is lost. It is ultimately empty. It would be lovely for the message of the sisters to come through in this segment - that a life united with God is what fulfills us - it is Truth. And their choice of the religious life is one way to live that in a very profound way.

From what I gathered listening to Teresa Tomeo's show, the sisters reported that chastity and poverty were two of the biggest "how can you live with that!?" questions. (It isn't all that's covered; the crew followed them around for a typical 24 hour day.) They said something to the effect that it seemed difficult for others to picture living without material goods and ***.      But these sisters are so filled with the Holy Spirit, they pray that God will use them to bring a positive message to those who do watch Oprah. Their joy really shines! I am fortunate that I can record it and watch it later this evening.

God Bless,

The only problem is that they follow them for 24 hours and then edit that down to, oh, say 15 minutes, and the producers get to choose what they air. I'm always leary of that because it then doesn't necessarily show the big picture that would be truly joyful and beautiful. They can slant it how they choose with editing. So that's what I'm praying - is that they are edited so that that positive message comes through. I'll trust in the Holy Spirit for that, too.

I went to a Catholic women's dinner where she was the guest speaker. She was fantastic (and pretty funny, too.) If anyone ever gets a chance to hear her in person, go!

Did anyone watch it this morning? Overall I thought it was a positive representation, but they did seem obsessed with the whole s*x thing. I found it interesting that they kept asking them way more about that than missing getting married or having children. The other two were kind of after-thoughts...just maybe revealing the priorities of society these days. In fact I think they were more obsessed about that with the sisters than with the geishas.

My oldest daughter was slightly dubious about watching it thinking it was going to be "just a bunch of boring praying", so she enjoyed watching them play field hockey. Opened up lots of discussion.

Isn't there some sort of magazine or something you can get that has information about different religious orders for those who think they might have a calling but are trying to find the right fit? With three (maybe four) daughters that might be worth keeping around the house.

I think one of the best parts was at the end, when Lisa Ling stated something to the effect that most have perceptions of those in religious life being so, I can't remember the word , like being confined or something , and she said that, on the contrary, she found religious life being truly liberating.

Some of the moms in my local group brought up some interesting points about the *e* focus, with the one whose daughter who just joined an order (not the same one) noting that, given the audience and today's world, they did have to ask. And the sisters gave great answers.

I liked that some of the sisters spoke about their "before" lives and the couple who mentioned boyfriends, showing they hadn't all always planned to be nuns, that they did have other lives, but they kept feeling something was missing or they felt compelled, even with all they had (by the world's standard) to leave it behind and join themselves to Christ.

Oh, and the one who was talking about her career and owning tons of clothes, beautiful lake home...and talking about what a materialistic world we are and Oprah nodding in total agreement.

Wouldn't it be truly awesome if a conversion came out of this?

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I know they had to ask. It just struck me that seemed to care about the *e* more than the marriage or children. I think when I was younger the questions would have emphasized the later with an assumption that the former is part of that. But now no such assumption is made...they're considered two totally different things with emphasis being put on the wrong one.

I agree with you 100%! It really amazed me that the chastity issue and poverty! elicited such bug-eyed, "wow, how can you do that?!"   The emphasis on things! and personal gratification was just so surprising, it made me sad.

A large part of that has to do with....it was Oprah! One of the richest women in the world. Her idea of poverty may be how she grew up...wanting to escape it. Plus, she also choose not to be married to Stedman. I think she could understand not having children because ....she doesn't.

Besides all that, I enjoyed the segment. The sisters came across so well. My dd looked up from her reading when the sisters were playing hockey in the gym. She seemed amazed to see that. The interview wasn't what I thought it would be -- defending the faith -- or those interviews that end and you wish the person would have said something else or explain things better. It was less defending and more sharing. Everyone seemed to have a respectful interest...especially Lisa Ling.

Yeah, Lisa Ling looked like she was chomping at the bit to add more in praise of the sisters. I really wish that she had her own show. I've liked Lisa Ling since when she used to do Channel One news for schools with Anderson Cooper.
