We're going to buy a juicer probably in the next day or two. I'm leaning toward a Champion but also wanted any recommendations from those who have used/own one. It will need to be low heat and able to juice things like greens and wheat grass. Price is pretty much a non-issue right now, but I'd like to stay under $300. There are several on Amazon that fit the bill, but I'm curious about IRL experiences with different brands and models.

This is for a cancer-fighting diet.

Thanks!!

hi, cornomama, i have a juicer but it's a $99 Jack LaLanne from Costco. i haven't used it for wheat grass, but I've used it for greens and it works fine. I did some googling for you and found out that if you want to juice wheatgrass in it you'll have to ball it up and/or wrap it in some lettuce or other green leaf. I'm not sure what you mean by "low heat" though.

Aussieannie had a Champion juicer before she switched to Vita-Mix (which is what I keep planning to get every Christmas, perhaps this is finally the year). Maybe she could chime in here.

praying for your dh and you!!

I think if you are wanting to do basic juicing the Champion Juicer is the way to go, we switched over to the Vita Mix because we wanted the uses it could offer us as an industrial blender ~ I could be wrong about prices now, but the Vita Mix was very pricey, we paid many years ago, $850 for it.

We would have held onto our champion juicer, if it hadn't been so jolly expensive, but the champion had to help fund the Vita Mix..I miss making icecreams with frozen fruit with the champion and of course it is a fabulous juicer.

Praying that you can get the things you need for dh and the family!

One of the moms on this forum told me the other day that you could make ice cream in the Vita-Mix....

Does one need a special attachment?

I would really like to get a Vita-Mix....

I've had the same Omega juicer for well over ten years with no problems. Once one of the handles broke and they promptly sent me TWO replacements for free! I find it yields more juice than others I've seen and the juice gets very little pulp in it, which is a real turn-off for the littles. Plus, they make paper filters for it to minimize the pulp even more. I've never juiced wheatgrass in it though, so I can't address that.
The vita-mix has always intrigued me, but it is not in my budget at the moment.

I burnt out the motor on my Vita-mix. I think I am probably the only person in the whole world to have done this. Now I need to send it back so they can fix it. Mine was a Christmas present, so not exactly sure how much it cost... around $400 or so, I think? Maybe more.

I've never used it to juice, though. Is it comparable to what you can get from a juicer? I mainly used mine for smoothies and batters. although I did make ice cream once.

Now I come to think of it, the Australian dollar was probably very bad all those years ago, if I were to buy today I'd be adding just 10% to the US dollar....

Thanks for the input. I chose this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002OKDT2/ref=pe_71220_14282200_pe _epc_t7

Can't wait to get it! I'll be a juicin' fool :) I just know there's no way dh will eat 15 carrots and 10 celery stalks everyday, plus kale, wheatgrass, etc.

Now to find out how to grow wheatgrass at home....

Bumping this thread to ask a question of anybody with a juicer... how loud is it? I want to stop drinking orange juice from concentrate in the mornings and switch to more vegetable juices, like carrot, etc. I have a Vitamix but it's so loud I can't use it when the kids are asleep. (Most of the bedrooms in this house are right next to the kitchen.)

Could I use a juicer in the morning without waking people up? Or would the juice keep overnight?

We've had a Champion for over 10 years now! I'd say it isn't as loud as the cheapy one we had prior, just a steady motor noise, we've lived in small houses and had children sleep through it.

Juicing the night before loses some of the nutrients etc

Juice is best when freshly made so you get the full benefit of the nutrients (at least that's what I read). The other question -- depends on your kids. Ours is pretty loud (both the juicer and the Vita-Mix) but the only one who really might wake up if I run it in the morning is the toddler. The others just sleep through almost anything, except me yelling or something major (happened one night when I slammed my hand into a glass shard).

My teenagers sleep through a lot, but the little ones wake up if I breathe differently. Or -- seems like it anyway.

I was reading reviews on amazon, and the one juicer they said was "whisper-quiet" also cost over $400. That's kind of out of the question, so... still thinking this over...

Just bought the vitamix at costco for $400. It is wonderful! I have made soup, smoothies, ice cream, more like ice milk.

The other night, I took a jar of our canned tomato sauce that we had blended in our old blender back in the summer and poured it right into the vitamix to make it more smooth and less watery. What a difference-delish.

It's quite expensive but we feel we will get a lot of use out of it when the garden is blooming again.

I do wish it wasn't so loud. We have an 18 month old who is a light sleeper. I get up very early and can't make smoothies at that hour-it would wake up the whole house.
