Ds is 6 and DD is 4 and I think they *should* be able to understand sacrificing during lent. Last year, they sacrificed meat on Fridays since we did, too.

I'm wondering, how can I explain (plainly) to them the reason we "give things up" during Lent? What sacrifices would be appropriate for them? I'm planning on talking with them about it and then letting them decide what they want to sacrifice.

Might it be easier to ADD things.. works of mercy are an appropriate Lenten practise.

For us, the explanation in Catholic Treasure Box with the Sacrifice Beads of St. Therese, making Presents for God was the best way to teach my son about Sacrifice. It was a great visualization for him. It's not a negative approach, but more positive. I can't remember which volume the story was in, though.

I grew up with the "offer-it-up", but dh isn't as comfortable using those terms as they are younger. We will sit down and talk about ways we will prepare our hearts during Lent, imitating Jesus' preparation in the desert. We are preparing our hearts for the risen Christ, but since He first had to suffer and die, we have to suffer and die to our sins, so we can really, truly love him better. We take on things as a family, and truly action speaks louder than words, particularly as a younger child. So what they see Mommy and Daddy doing inspires them.

Kind of following Jodie's point, the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three-pronged approach to Lent. So we take on the extra prayers, fasting is the giving up, and the almsgiving is the doing of good works and giving of ourselves in different ways. Giving-up is only 1/3 of it. And fasting can just be little ways, like delaying instant gratification. Wait a few minutes for a drink or a snack...

Anyway, this is just a mish-mash of ramblings....

That would be Volume 5 - the story and directions for how to make them.

We have the Treasure Box books, and they do each have a set of sacrifice beads. That might be just the thing.

This is what we did last year:
Lent 2009

We'll be doing this a bit different this year since we're doing more of an Eastern Rite fasting, but I think we'll keep the rocks.
