Has anyone ever tried Nutri-System? I know it is a bit pricey, but Costco has it on sale right now. I am really wanting to lose weight, but honestly, I don't have the brain-power to think through a healthier diet everyday. I was thinking maybe a month of Nutri-System would be enough to jump-start my weight loss.
Anyone?

I don't know anything about it.. but I do know when I want to lose weight other than obvious things like not eating chocolate candy every day that the best thing I can do is find something active to do and use more calories rather than take in less.

Of course, you are right, Jodie. I just want an "easy" fix!

oh yes.. magic wand where are you
But for me adding the exercise is the easier fix than messing with the food side. And I don't mean doing aerobics or something either unless you like doing it. It could be hanging laundry on the line instead of using the dryer. You're on your feet and bending and lifting etc. It's more active than using the dryer and you would need to do it just about every day.
See increased activity without exercising.
maybe it's taking the kids for a walk.. again it's not exercising.. anyone who is big on *exercise* will tell you that.. BUT it's active and it burns more calories than sitting at home.

I tried it years ago and I was so hungry I felt sick most of the time. Maybe it has changed now but it wasn't very healthy at the time and I ended up quitting after a few weeks. Didn't lose much either so that made it easier to walk away.

My father tried it...didn't stick with it for very long, price and taste. It was "working", but of course it always seems easier for men.

I did it about twenty years ago when I was in college. The food was extremely poor tasting and unfilling, lots of bizarre fruit snack sort of things--BUT it's been 20 years so the food quality undoubtedly has improved. I lost about 30 lbs (which I have long since regained). The main problem I see with it is that it doesn't teach anything about portion control of REAL food or require exercise. Compared with the 20/20 Lifestyles program my husband did last year--he lost 85 lbs!--where intense daily exercise, radical change in diet and a new hobby (rowing) have become his norm...there's no surprise which program gets more sustainable long-term results.

I'm hesitant to try anything that doesn't use food in my kitchen because I just think its too easy to eat "the old way" once I stop using the program.
I totally know what you mean about the difficulty of figuring out what to eat every day. And I know its lame, but I'm not like Jodie...I tend to add the exercise in as my very last resort. That feels even harder to me than figuring out what to eat.
I've had good success in the past with Weight Watchers points and I never signed up. I ebayed the materials for about $40. But the best success I've ever had was with low carb eating, and it was easier to track than points.

Yeah, I was going to say, like Books: instead of spending any money and worrying about calorie counts or eating prepared foods (which is hard with a family), try giving up sugar as much as possible and just eating more protein and see what happens.
You will lose some water weight right away with higher protein consumption and less sugar becaaauuusse: a) protein's biproduct is nitrogen and requires more effort to be flushed out by the body, and b) sugar basically acts as a cellular bloat and we retain water after sugar consumption.
Make sugar to drink enough fluids. Enough vitamins, esp. Bs, C, and D, good oils and fatty acids, minerals like chromium, sufficient iodine.

My sister did NutriSystem for a month or two and slimmed down quite a bit but she couldn't stick with it and balooned again as soon as she stopped.
I don't know if this will encourage you but I've been trying to focus on building small, healthy habits one things at a time. It's not a quick fix but I think it makes all the results you do see that much more lasting. So, building on what these ladies have said maybe choose one bad thing to take out of your diet. High fructose corn syrup, perhaps? Go through your cupboards and toss what you can in good conscience or get your kids to eat it up quickly or something and then don't ever buy it again. Or if that would mean a LOT of food maybe just cut out one thing at a time--only soda, then only processed bread.
Obviously I have no idea how you eat but I hope I'm making my point.
I'm motivated by encouraging others --hope I'm not being annoying with unsolicited advice.

Molly, I don't have experience. My dh always tells me I can't expect overnight success. But golly, i sure want some results to know I'm doing something right to motivate to keep on going!
A friend of mine before her daughter's wedding decided to do LA Weight Loss. She knew it was expensive, but also knew that she was going to be stressed and needed her food all laid out and not to think about it. She lost a lot of weight, probably more than she needed -- she looked skinny. She needed that boost to help her get over that hump. Since then she's put on a bit back, but not all, but now she looks healthy.
Just a different perspective. I see so many commercials with the weight loss pills or programs and always ask my dh why I don't even consider those? I think it's because I think I got here by my own fault, and if I'm going to lose it, it will have to be through my own doing, too. But in the meantime, I am not losing anything!

Thanks, Ladies! I went and read reviews on Costco's site. While most reviews were good, even the good ones said the food was so-so and the servings really small. I, for one, can't do that! I end up binging if I try something that leaves me starving.
I actually love to exercise. I just don't work it into my day anymore.
We have cut out the HFCS, but it was harder than I thought it would be because it was in our bread, our bagels, all sorts of non-sweets!
I am working on portion control on my own- one bean burrito instead of two, two pieces of pizza instead of three, etc. My trouble area is snacking and craving sweets. I find myself always looking for a sweet snack. And after the kids go to bed, I like to unwind with something like ice cream. I do well for a while keeping it out of the house, but then I crack and beg dh to bring me some!
I would love to cut out sugar and most bread products, I just don't know how (or maybe I don't want to know.LOL!)
I love the encouragement and ideas, not annoying at all!

Hi Molly,
I used Nutri-system and combining that with walking a half hour per day, I lost 35lbs, and I have kept all but 6 lbs off...but in the meantime have had a pregnancy, so I am still working on getting back to where I was...hopefully by summer! Those last 5 lbs are always the hardest.
Now to Nutri-system. I thought the food was fine...some of it was even pretty good..some not so much. However, I am a very non-picky eater, being raised to eat what I was given, followed up with a "thank-you very much!" If you are a picky eater, I think this would be a VERY big challenge to eating the food.
The portions ARE small...for a reason! Americans are NOTORIOUS for overeating. I found that after adjusting to the smaller portions that I wasn't hungry anymore after the first week or so, and that the food that they provided was more than sufficient to my size and stature. I have been able to maintain my weightloss by mimicing those same portion sizes.
I used Nutri-system for roughly two months, and the cost is really not that much extra, given that you have to eat anyway. The leftover food that I didn't use was returnable for full refund, depending on the date of the food...you should check into that.
If you want to talk to me about it more, I would be happy to talk to you. PM me and I will send you my phone number.
I can honestly say that it made a huge difference in my life. I feel MUCH healthier now that an any time in my 30s!
Peace,
Sara

Funny that you should post this now Molly. I have been looking myself to start Nutri-system. I did it about 20 yrs ago. It worked really well at that time and I was able to keep the weight off for a number of years. Roll marriage, lots of moving, and seven kids into the picture and I certainly have put all the weight back on plus, plus, plus.....
Now with Rob deploying for a year, I just want something real easy to help me. I have an 'all or none' personality, so I really didn't have a problem sticking to the program and not cheating.
I too was looking at the Costo price. Do you know if this is a one time thing, or is it continual? In other words, can you use the special pricing for more than just the 35 bk, lunch and dinners?
