We're taking our kids to the annual Stock Show and Rodeo next week. We've done it for years so it's nothing new but now that we're homeschooling, I'd like to expand on it a bit and was looking for some cowboy type books for ages 9-12. I found Mary G's old post from a couple of years ago and pulled a couple of those books but was wondering if there was something for the older age. I do plan on ordering B is for Buckaroo.
I'm thinking a chapter book about a man (or woman  ) and their horse running cattle in the open plains. Hard work, tenacity, a spirit of the "wild" west.

The books by these first two authors are OOP, but accessible through libraries. Were favorites of my brother growing up. None of my boys have been big cowboy enthusiasts so I am not really familiar as in having read recently or anything. These books are general stories of boys in the cowboy world so not men as you describe. I'm drawing a blank on more books that would fit your criteria. I'll keep thinking.

The Little Britches series by Ralph Moody is about ranch life in turn of the century Colorado. It wasn't always the the "cowboy" picture you are looking for - but one of the books in the series in particular, The Home Ranch, would probably fit the bill of what you are looking for.
And I have several ideas for good non-fiction books for kids that age as well as tons more picture books, if you are interested.

Yes, I would love non-fiction books too. I'm not opposed to picture books at all but my the kids are 9 1/2 and 11 so needed something a little less juvenile. I liked B is for Buckaroo because it has the small pieces of info but then more in-depth info my daughter would enjoy.

Looking in one of my 'books about books', a compilation of picture books for older readers,(9-12+yrs) I see recommended under Cowboys/Old West; Cowboy Country - Ann Herbert Scott An old time buckaroo tells about his life as a modern day cowboy.
Extra rec's to go with this book that 'explore the myth and history of the American cowboy' are; Cowboy - Linda Grandfield, An Album - Ticker & Fields, Cowboy's: A Library of Congress Book - Martin Sandler, Cowboys of the Wild West - Russell Freedman and Cowboy - David Murdoch.

I know this is no longer timely for you, Kathryn, but we just read a book that would have been perfect and so I wanted to add it to the thread.
How to Get Rich on a Texas Cattle Drive
It's sort of a journal set up for the storyline. Each page spread tells about some aspect of this young man's adventures as a cowboy on a cattle drive. Haven't found one before that specifically covers the era of the cattle drive cowboys - which is what we associate them with. Includes lots of factual info with the story (including a tally sheet of his income and expenses) and very good references and author notes. It looks like it is part of a series of similar books on other old west topics (gold rush, pioneer settler) from National Geographic, so I'm going to get the others now. We enjoyed this one a lot.

 - truth be told he doesn't exactly get rich being a trail drive cowboy (but wait 'til he becomes part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and writes a book...  )
It (the "get rich" angle) is a pretty clever premise for a series. I'm trying to get ahold of the others - but our library surprisingly only has this one.
