Hi Friends!
We are new to homeschooling and I am trying to find a curriculum for my 7 year old science freak. There are a ton of history based unit curricula, but does anyone know of a series that approaches this theory from a science perspective? (ie uses a science theme to teach, geography, literature, art, history, etc.)
Any ideas?!

oh man, i wish.
i ask this on different lists every so often, hopeing something new has come out that i just don't know about yet.
so far, no. and the worst part, is a lot of the science choices for homeschoolers are no so great either.

Beautiful Feet Press' Geography Through Literature Study Guide is the closest thing I can think of. It uses 4 Holling C. Holling classics, and offers some beautiful mapwork. The art comes in the form of sketching some of the things from the books...I remember a turtle, a covered wagon, a few others. The maps offered are lovely and ours are treasures now. The science comes in through the amazing living science portrayed in the Holling C. Holling books. They recommend this unit study for 3rd - 7th grade, so you're 7yo might be a bit young for it in terms of reading ability. If he's a real science whiz, you might just consider reading aloud to him from the books. I promise, Holling C. Holling will be absolutely captivating to read aloud!
Anyway, I always think of Holling C. Holling as such classic living science that I thought I'd mention it for you to consider.

Winterpromise has 2 science based courses--Animals and their Worlds and Adventures in the Sea and Sky.
Also, check out Moving Beyond the Page, a lot of their stuff is science based.

Amanda Bennett has several.
And I have a friend who uses the Intermediate version of this book.

I used Moving Beyond the Page with my youngest and it has quickly become one of my favorite programs. I only use one or two concepts a year so that I'm not spending $$. There is yahoo group where people sell it used.

I'm not a unit study person - but I do know a lot of good history reads to entice a scientist and 2nd the Holling C Holling books. If you end up creating your own science related unit study, just let me know and I'll gather some of the things that enticed our science fan in history. (Lives of inventors, history of technology, construction of the Erie Canal, and of course, the inevitable (with boys anyways) weapons used. That became a whole 'nother rabbit trail for one of ours. I'm not sure how much of it is 7 yo as our 7 yo have generally not been reading.

I haven't used this, but I have a friend who does. She and her son seem pleased with it, but I don't know any details.

What does YEC stand for? I was considering Sea and Sky, but I don't understand the YEC caution since I don't know what it is.......

This is the second time I've come back to this thread. My 8yo ds is definitely more interested in science than anything else. While I've attempted to create a multi-level history-centered approach to our schooling, up to this point he has really not been involved. I also readily admit that my younger kids (3rd, 1st, and K) are "unschooled" for the most part.
I don't know why I didn't think of this approach for the younger kids before, but I am now seriously looking into the Montessori Great Lessons to help inspire further study and interest in science (and hopefully other) topics. You can find more ideas here: Miss Barbara
