Ladies our ds14 has a bad ear infection . I've started him on what I've always used with the other children lobelia drops & garlic oil .
However I'm concerened this may not work because he is the child who was on heavy antibiotics and other meds for 3 months due to his bone infection of the foot. Of course he needed the treatment hospitaliztion etc. or he would have lost the foot . However the big drawback is he is now resistent to most regular antibiotic treatments .
I am really hoping this home remedy will kick in just like with the other children .
However if it does not is there perhaps a stronger remedy we could turn to ? Our only medical option is the walk in as our dr. requires at least 24hr notice to see us . I can't stand walk in , feels like fast food medicine and that is where my ex was misdiagnosed etc.
anyway any little tips on remedies that blast ear infection would be a great help .
Thanks , Roxie

I had a double ear infection while pregnant, and the MD at my chiropractor's office did not want to prescribe antibiotics.

He did have me doing salt water gargles (which will help prevent the infection from spreading to the other ear, the germs reside in the throat and that's how they usually get into the ear), and steaming with camphor oil. I used a fondue pot with the camphor and held my head over with a blanket. Hot showers, too. Anything to help the congestion move, but I think the vapor of the oil also has properties that help fight the infection and not just clear congestion (not sure).

TONS of vitamin C. I find Emergen-C helps me mega-dose with ease while staying hydrated. I would take it to bowel tolerance if it were me.

I have heard of people using garlic in olive oil. I've also heard good things about Hyland's ear drops as a homeopathic. Taking garlic whole (slice it, expose to air for 10 minutes, and swallow like a pill) will help in case it is a virus instead of bacteria at the root of the infection.

My number one ear infection fighter? Breastmilk. I know you aren't lactating, and I often wonder what I will do for my youngest children when I stop. But, at the first sign of an earache, I express some milk and put a few drops in their ears, and we've actually never had ear infections here, or if we did, they were gone in 24 hours and were never diagnosed. It also works for pinkeye. I thought it was CRAZY when I first heard it, but it works.

(Fwiw, I was sick with a horrible case of the flu on top of morning sickness and did not follow my own advice when I got mine until it was severe).

I just wanted to echo what Lindsay had to say about treatments, and add a few that I know of too.

Breastmilk: Yes! The miracle solution for so, so many problems. I often advise my friends, who are lactating, to use this powerful tool.

Chiropractic care: I can recount many stories of friends who took their children in for an adjustment ~ POOF ~ infection gone.

Wally's Ear Oil: I have it on hand because I've heard good things of it. But (thanks be to God) my children have never had ear infections.

Onion: You can use on onion to draw out the infection. Cut an onion in half, wrap in cheese cloth, hold the onion to the ear for 20 minutes at a time. The onion will help to draw out the infection. (I also use an onion in our home to keep us free from virus too...).

Oil of Oregano: A couple of drops in the ear, a couple of times a day ~ this is what I've heard, but have not used myself.

Homeopathy: Best to stick with Classical Homeopathy, which means, choose the best remedy (only one) that matches the presenting symptoms. Homeopathy is our first line of defense at our house. I treat all of us with acute cases, but if something is chronic, then it is best left to a Homeopath (if you like, I have a list of remedies that are very typical for an ear infection)

Hydrogen Peroxide: An old home remedy is to put 3% hydrogen peroxide (a few drops) in the ear. Leave in until the bubbling sensation abates. Do this a couple times per day (I have a friend who does this, but I have not used this myself).

...Just some suggestions for you. I pray you find something that works for your dear one. I know that I have a few more ideas, but these are the ones that popped in my mind first .

Thanks so much , it really helps knowing and having the reminder these remedies do work . I tried oregano oil as we'd never before and it burned his ear to much so I'm giving it to him on salad now instead . I remembered the old onion trick too ! He gave me a funny look but did do it . My mum told me that my garmma's family also used to leave a bowl of freshly sliced onions out on the table during cold & flu season to help keep those germs at bay so I'm going to try that too .
So get this , after so many yrs of not nursing I can still express breast milk ! maybe all those yrs paid off eh. I used it for eye infections all the time however I do not think a 14yo boy is wanting anything to do with a mothers breast this time in his life
Thanks so much I'm working with lobelia and garlic / onion oil right now . So far he seems to be feeling much better and the red has left the outer ear area which is a very good sign .

That's exactly what I do! The first couple of days, it really does put a stink in the house , but then it wanes a bit and it's not so bad ~ I leave the onion out until it dries, then slice up another one!

Let me know how it goes, I'd like to know what worked for him!

Well, then don't tell him! Just go express it, put it in a dropper, and tell him its just one more crazy thing you are going to try. I don't think my boys (younger, of course) have any idea what it is I'm putting in their eyes and ears when they are sick!

Wow! That's great! I've never used them, I think I'll get some, sounds like something good to have on hand.

Well, that is a dilema. But, it is what it is, and you must do what you must do.

My 'problem' with antibiotics is in the wake of the aftermath and the mess they leave behind ~ not to mention they are suppressive, rather than curative. But I digress.

I've no doubt boosting his immunity will do wonders for him. Because antibiotics translates to anti-life, you can bet they are doing their job of killing every bacteria within him, both the good and bad. A good probiotic will help tremendously with this effort to replace all the good gut bacteria that makes up one's immune system.

Also, might I suggest a tonic that I use myself to fight infection?

Provided to me by a midwife:
A tall glass of warm water, the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon, a heaping spoonful of honey (preferrably raw honey from the comb, but use what you have), and 2 to 3 cloves of raw garlc (chopped to bits and tossed in with the drink). Give it all a good stir, then throw it down without taking too much time to savor the flavor . This tonic is my good, good friend. I had a bout of mastitis around Thanksgiving this past year, starting taking this tonic immediately (about three times per day), started homeopathics right away, and poof, gone in two days. And it was a bad, awful case of mastitis ~ had me laid out in bed with chills and fever. I sing the praises of this remedy.

I'll be praying for him. I sure hope he feels relief sooner, than later.

Blessings!

We use this too. sometimes we use ginger instead of garlic. works wonders.

Just a reminder to make sure it is an ear infection....my dd had a terrible "ear infection" for a few days which I tried several remedies on with no luck. Then on about the third day - she broke out in blisters. Shingles in the ear and side of her face. Just thinking since it sounds like he might have some low immunity after his recent illness. Hope he feels better soon. And...that is so interesting about the breast milk. Never would have thought of that.
