Dear ladies --
It's been a while since I've done anything but sporadically lurk here, but I am in need of prayers. After almost seven years of homeschooling -- during which our children have flourished -- we're experiencing escalating pressure from my family against our homeschooling, our Catholicism, and what they perceive as our evil politics (ie right-wing -- I think we're a lot less right-wing than they think we are, but never mind).
We don't, any more, live in the same town as my mother and brother, and I can't decide whether this makes things better or worse. Certainly our business is more our own, but I think maybe they worry more when they can't see the kids, to ascertain for themselves that I'm really not keeping them in the cellar. But on a visit home at Christmas I overheard my mother saying some rather . . . well, things that indicate that her faith in our parental judgment is zero . . . over the phone to an old friend of mine who'd called for me. And the other day on the phone she asked my 6-year-old whether she wouldn't rather go to school (6yo said, "No, I go to school at home, and my mom teaches me everything she knows." Go, girl!).
And then, also the other day, an anonymous commenter who is very transparently my brother left a couple of hostile comments in the combox on a post at my blog -- the kind of thing you'd expect to hear from a troll, and I'd shrug it off except that I know who the troll is. We've never been especially close, but that he would, under safe cover of anonymity, speak to me with what really kind of feels like hatred, fills me with sadness. (and I have not, and will not, out him publicly as my brother on the blog. As far as anyone knows who comments there, he's just some random wacko.)
I have drafted what I hope is a letter of reconciliation to him -- not that I have high hopes of achieving it, but for the good of my own soul, I feel I have to make the effort. Maybe I really have been the rotten sister he seems to think I am. All I can do is offer an olive branch, asking for and extending forgiveness for any past sins. As far as my mother is concerned, she's a widow, lonely and unhappy, and my children are the only grandchildren, so I simply can't, in charity, be estranged from her. I have a duty to my children, obviously, but I have a duty to her as well. Still, I sense that something is coming to a head in my family, and I am sad, worried, and uneasy.
Thank you so much for your prayers. You all have mine.
Sally

Praying for all your intentions, Sally. My daughter always told me "Be confident in your parenting" whenever we dealt with comments or situations such as those you've described. May the Holy Family fill you and your family with grace, peace and blessed assurance in all that the Lord has called you to do.

Again, thank you all very much. Your prayers help immeasurably. I feel far more at peace, far less inclined to brood on passing hurtful things, far more able to go on serenely, talk to my mom on the phone with love . . . I don't know whether *things* are objectively better, but I feel better and better able to go on doing what I know is right.
I would like to ask continued prayers for my brother, who is vehemently unchurched, and with whom I've never really had a close relationship, especially in adulthood. He seems to have resented me (I'm older, got to do things first and all that) for a long, long time, and honestly, it's got to be much harder on him than it is on me. It's a heck of a lot worse to be unforgiving than unforgiven (by another person).
So again, thanks so, so much for all your prayers, and do remember my brother in your intentions. Praying for all of you here.
