My dd is having her wisdom teeth taken out on Monday. Any suggestions as to what to do to make her more comfortable? suggestions as to what to feed her?

Depends on anesthesia - when I had mine out I had a general anesthesia and then made the mistake of eating dairy products on an empty stomach. If they just use a local, that probably won't be an issue.
She'll probably have to spend most of the day with cotton rolls on the extraction sites to stop the bleeding. (This will probably mean sitting around, watching TV or something like that.) If they do stitches, they will tell her to avoid drinking with a straw that day.
I'd say soft/liquid foods would be most comfortable, and nothing too spicy or irritating (some people, like me, have stomach issues after a general anesthesia).
Praying for your dd!

I have had 2 wisdom teeth pulled and 4 molars pulled over the years
I would suggest she not eat any meat for 24 hours before, if she is having general anesthesia. It makes your bowels sluggish and its best if you have nothing heavy in your system at the time
I had no appetite the days my teeth were pulled. I drank good juice (not through a straw) and sipped broths.
Salt water rinses helped alot with keeping the spots clean. Cold packs will be good to have handy.
If you use a chiropractor, schedule an appointment for her a few days after the extraction. Every time, my neck has been out of whack afterwards. In fact the first time I went to the chiro was after my first tooth was pulled.
How hard they are to remove and how deep the "caters" left, will really depend on how hard the recovery is. I had a tooth pulled a year ago that is still an issue, where as one of my wisom teeth gave me no problems at all.
Hugs, and prayers

arnica is a homeopathic that is wonderful for helping bleeding stop very quickly. I've given it to a child having a tooth out prior to the appt. and the dentist even commented on how fast the bleeding stopped.
Bach's Rescue Remedy is another homeopathic/flower remedy that I use it helps with stress and trauma.. just helps you deal with it better. So if she's nervous going in this could help her. It doesn't get rid of any fear just helps you deal with it better.
Then pineapple (bromelain) and ginger help reduce swelling and speed healing of soft tissue injuries.. and a pineapple smoothie with some fresh ginger grated into it is very tasty and would be light and soft.

Can I get it at the health food store? How long prior to the surgery do you administer?

Thanks for the idea.
Any other soft food ideas? I am a terrible nurse, and can't think of any at this moment.

yes you should be able to get it at the healthfood store. I think Hyland's even makes one and I can get that at the drugstore. There are sprays and creams with it.. for bruising and such.. but you should be able to get it in little pellets or tablets which is what I use.
I give it before we go into the office so as not to panic anyone there. and then again after we leave and a couple times (2-3) a day for the first couple of days would be good to keep the swelling and bruising down as well as the bleeding.
Soft foods.. ummm
scrambled eggs
oatmeal
twice baked potatoes
mashed potatoes
yogurt
cottage cheese with canned fruit
soups

You can apply dampened tea bags (warm water, real tea) as compresses to the extraction sites to help reduce the swelling, and thus reduce the pain. Warm salt water rinses are very soothing, but I think you're not supposed to do that for the 1st 24 hours because it can dislodge the clots that are forming to reduce the bleeding. Even when you do use the rinse, swish it very gently. No sucking through a straw. Also, for comfort, and to relieve the sense of generalized yuckiness, I have taken a gauze pad and a bit of warm water and wiped the blood off the child's front teeth. That may sound silly, but my daughter really appreciated it. Sorry if this post has been too bloody and graphic , but this IS the nitty gritty of the situation.
Praying for your daughter, Natalia.
Peace,
Nancy

Prayers!
I had this done a few years ago. NOT a good idea to wait until you are an adult, apparently...it was kind of...involved. The roots were very long.
But really, the recovery was better than I'd hoped, even for my nasty ones. They did give me prescription naprosen for pain, which worked well, but they are NOT kidding when they say to take it with food...I got an ulcer from these. I guess I wasn't careful enough.

My husband just had all four removed about a two months having a root canal; he said the root canal was breeze compared to the other other. So, do be sure to have pain meds on hand and keep ahead of the pain (don't let the old dose completely wear off) for about the first 24-48 hours.
If she starts to complain of an ear-ache a few days later take her in immediately for dry socket treatment. I had dry socket when I had my two removed--probably because I went riding roller coasters five days later.

I'll be praying for your daughter. My 17yodd just had hers out yesterday. No new advice, except to make extra of the soft treat type food: yogurt, puddings, etc. so other siblings don't feel left out. She slept propped up by cushions and pillows on the easy chair and ottoman in the living room to prevent rolling over on her face. My dh was home yesterday and able to take her to the appointment while I took the others (17m-14yo) to a museum for most of the day. She appreciated the quiet as the anethesia wore off.
God bless,
Mary-NY

Hope all is going ok with the wisdom teeth extraction. I only know what the nurse told us with our dd - she said not to be overly aggressive with the gauze and not to worry with a little bleeding. Being overaggressive at stopping bleeding and gauze is one of the causes of dry socket evidently (The bottom line - get good instructions from the doc or nurse about precisely what you should and should not worry about. My mom went a whole weekend with dry sockets because she didn't know what to look for, didn't want to bother the doc and tends to ignore pain.
Our oldest had almost no trouble at all - a little groggy is all and actually went to a music job the next day though I insisted on driving :). I think we had some soft foods, soups, etc. I cannot remember whether they said cold or hot was more soothing - but we did whatever they told us and I'm sure that is pretty standard and the nurse or doc should tell you. She had all 4 removed at once, at least one was impacted and growing sideways. She was most concerned about getting too much meds (and wanted to recover quickly due to a competition) - but didn't feel up to just doing it with a local. She negotiated some reduction in meds with the doctor in light of the fact that we never take medication, and tend to be quite sensitive to it. She didn't want to be out of it for 3 days. She was a little groggy for the day of - went to sleep and seemed pretty normal by AM.
We scheduled a consult appointment to discuss everything thoroughly before deciding and to give us a chance to really ask all our questions together and come to some sort of agreement/decision so that we were all on the same page.
Oh, and both of my nephews had wisdom teeth out with only a local. I'm not sure either would chose that route again. One well - he was in the naval academy at the time and didn't have a choice. I remember something about a soft diet that he had to pick up himself. My other nephew did it - well maybe because of the competitive thing. I don't think he'd do it again - but might never admit that to strangers or his brother.
Offering a Hail Mary now.
Janet

Janet,
thanks for the Hail Mary. Gabi is doing fine. She had general anesthesia and was a little silly when she got home. She did not bleed much but is a little swollen. She is taking Ibuprofen every 6 hours. We will see how the night goes.
Thanks all of you for your advice and prayers,

Hope she is recovering nicely, Natalia....my 16 yr old just had his out last month, and did great. The first few days are okay if you stay on top of the pain with meds.....don’t be shy about using them! Keep her hydrated....
Take care!!
