Gals I need some ideas for flour storage . I had just the last straw to my unpredictable day yesterday when at 6pm my 3yo grandson was adding the whole wh flour to my yeast milk , butter and I saw the mouse poop !
It is a tad hard not to be a bit mad at taking on my exs two cats last spring and then had adult mice move in in the fall 1 ok no complaining . move on Roxie
I have almost all dry product in big glass jars but flour comes in such large quanities I would not have room on my shelf . dh was thinking metal or wood boxes . are there such items out there ?
I do not like plastic and wish to avoid plastic items coming into our home .
So all you bread makers , country kitchen gals any ideas for storage bins ?

I use food grade 5 gallon buckets (don't look at the price on this one, I just linked so you could see a pic. I'm certain you can find them locally for inexpensive!) and gamma lids for all my dry good storage.

Another inexpensive option is metal popcorn tins, which are so popular at Christmas time. You may even be able to find some on clearance right now. They easily hold 10-15 pounds of flour. I use them for flour, bulk oatmeal, etc. My mil gives us a tin every year...we have several with pretty snowy landscapes on them.

You might also keep your eye open for old-style metal picnic tins, the kind with two handles, or old fashion metal bread drawers.

We use larger coolers for 50 pounds bags of flour, but those are plastic, so that won't help you.

You might also consider buying a new metal garbage can and simply keep the flour inside the original paper bags.

I have a smallish (10 gallon) galvanized trash can, lined with a plastic trash bag, with the flour sack inside that. 25 lbs fits just right.

Gals I just found these wooden barrels they are pretty expensive though but we have this store right here in our city . I first found a link to a place in the states in OH . that makes these . I wonder how sturdy they are ? I think I'll go into the store and see them for real to get an idea if this is what we'd like . trash can is the best option right now for price I think . Roxie, notice that those pretty wood barrels don't have any lining in them.. they recommend using a plastic bag of some sort before putting food in them. Though perhap your flour bag could sit down in it without being dumped out?

Also, take into account your climate -- Colorado is super dry so it's fine not to have a completely air-tight seal whereas Virginia tends toward damp/humid conditions which can really make a mess of a lot of flour!

Well problem solved dh is making me a storage box ! It will be both a seat/ bench for at the table and a storage container for food . I just needed to show him that cedar dogfood barrel and the rpice and of course perfectionist that he is , well he can build something more practical and cheaper I love having a do it all handy man dh all I need do is begin a project and along he comes my hero we live in the perfect climate for flour the prairie Thanks a bunch gals
