Cranberry juice; bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a big glass of water; just lots and lots and lots of fluids.

Cranberry juice is excellent (but not the sugar-added kind). R.W. Knudsen has an excellent "Just Cranberry" beverage that works well, no sugar added. It is the D-Mannose within the cranberry itself that is healing agent, and the sugar will only further inhibit your immune function.

I use a product called Cranberry-Forte (by Integrative Therapeutics) ~ I'm sure you can get a similar product at Super Supplements (or other type store), just make sure it contains D-Mannose.

Also, raw garlic works wonders for me personally. At the first sign of illness I mix up some warm water, a heaping pile honey, freshly squeezed juice of a lemon, and about 2 or 3 chopped up fresh garlic cloves. I drink this 2 or 3 times a day.

drop any sugar and simple carbs (like white flour etc) out of your diet too. Sugars feed the problem.

Uva ursi is a good herb for UTIs. But I think this is one you have to be very careful about so see if you have an herbalist or someone local who can help you out. Also straight cranberry (I did "shots" of it) and echinacea.

Sue,

Second what everyone here has already said. I make a kind of an all-purpose infection-fighting drink whenever we need it.

3 c. boiling water
1T fresh grated ginger (not the tea, it's too weak)
1/4c fresh lemon juice
6-8 bags dandelion root tea
1 c. Knudsen cranberry
agave nectar to taste

Steep the ginger and dandelion tea bags for 15 minutes, strain. Add lemon juice and cranberry juice. Add agave to taste if you'd like, it's pretty strong. This is enough for a day. Chase with plenty of water. You can take it hot or cold.

The ginger alkalizes and is a SUPER duper anti-inflammatory. Dandelion, cranberry, and lemon all alkalize as well. You already know that cranberry is a natural antibiotic. Agave is a somewhat lower glycemic sweetener, so it preferable to white sugar, and is not as "thick" as honey, so it dissolves more easily.

Also consider and herbal sitz bath to clear anything from the outside. Barring that, a soak in Epsom can work wonders.

HTH

Blessings,

I third everyone for preventing it or when it is mild, mild, mild. But when I KNOW I have an infection (by the time I wake up!), it is too late. The two times I've had them I have been in such agony I needed the meds. And they have brought instant relief.

BUT I am one of those types that hates going in, and I would love to know of something that is powerful enough to relieve the symptoms and pain, and give you the patience to wait for the body to heal itself.

Here's a good article on D-Mannose. Our urologist gave the article and D-Mannose to us when my infant daughter had a urinary tract infection.

Hi,
9 days later and I am better...Everyday there was an improvement...I did not get worse once i started the D-Mannose and I believe that is what made the difference. I used cranberry supplements, D-mannose every 2 hours and water, water, water! I did talk to the Dr's office..advice from nurse was come in if it lasted longer than 7-10 days or worsened. The self-healing process took awhile and a lot of rest....I would be interested in hearing if any one else decides to try the D-Mannose for UTI! Thanks Eva, for the article. That was very helpful and I adjusted my doses according to that article...

Sue, I'm so glad that the D-Mannose and the article about it helped. It did wonders with my daughter too and we've used it several times since -- whenever we thought somebody was coming down with a UTI.

I have used D-Mannose. It did work. I don't use it any more because I found something that works better for me and faster--estrogen cream.

Where do you buy the estrogen cream, or do you need a prescrip? And what is the D-Mannose, exactly?

I tend to get these in late pregnancy. My midwife has me take TONS of Vitamin C tablets for them and it has worked well...it makes your urine acidic and helps kill the bacteria. However, this is always early on as they do urine dips at each midwife visit...usually I'm not even having symptoms. Not sure how this would work with an established infection.

I get mine from my nutritionist. It is called Phyto-Est. I can look up the details on it if you'd like.

Thanks, Sue and Michelle. I'll look both of those up. Duh....I guess I should have tried Google before bugging you.

God is merciful in that I haven't come down with one in a long while, but they are miiiiiiiserable, and I am then out of commission, so better have all of the info just....in.....case.
