Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,

I'm having some trouble finding resources for this on the net. Year One for 4H Cake Decorating is a single layer square, round or rectangular cake with standard frosting and 1/2 to 2/3 of the cake must be decorated with edible items (no frosting tips).

I have dd's record books from the past but ds doesn't want to copy of course. I know I've seen tons of cute ideas (and of course I can't find any past articles I've saved) and when I type in search terms I get lots of cake decorating with tubes or shaped cakes.

I know that with the level of talent on this board you all probably have done some pretty clever things or know of some good websites. C'mon, c'mon

Oh....and I forgot to mention I would love to give ds some ideas to tie in with his history this year (hey...what good is homeschooling if you can't make a cake tie in with history? : pioneers, covered wagons, railroads, early west, etc.....but all ideas are most welcome!

Would this mean items like edible real flowers, or shapes made from marzipan or icing?

Sorry...that wasn't too clear.
Most of the kids use things like gumdrops, cookies, pretzels, etc. You can tint coconut for grass, use graham cracker crumbs for dirt or sand, etc.

We're looking for a few unique designs. Dd did a 4th of July fireworks design with licorice whips, a square "gift" package cake with fruit roll-up ribbons and bow, and that's all I can think of right now. There are 4 cakes that need to be done by fair and of course the cake to enter in the fair.

My favorite places for these types of cake decorating ideas are Family Fun and Martha Stewart Kids.

Martha had this one on-line, using candy wafers. I know it's not the right shape but maybe could be adapted.
Rainbow Fish
She doesn't have many other fun type cakes shown on-line but she does in her Kids magazine.

Family Fun's website has lots of cake ideas. I thought these looked particularly fun and fit your parameters.
Gum Drop Garden decorated cake - could also add the gummy worms and crushed cookie "dirt" that is a common cake decoration.

Tee-time cake could be adapted to an Oregon Trail cake for your history link. I'm envisioning a conestoga wagon made from a twinkie and fruit leather (???)

Pizza cake decorated with fruit

These 2 game themed cakes were really cute.
Chinese Checkers cake
Foosball Cake

Gwen, you shouldn't get me started on things like this.

Gumdrop Machine cake
Kite cake
Stove cake
Crown cake
Ocean cake - this one is adorable if you could figure out how to do the frosting accessory parts with something else (like cut fruit leather)
Artist's Palette - this could be done with a round cake too - wouldn't have to be the palette shape.
Quilt cake
Picnic cake - looks like Starbursts make good edible clay!
Spider Web cake

Now, I probably won't be able to fall asleep because I'll be trying to figure out ways to actually make history cakes!!!

I knew I could count on somebody around here! The Foosball cake looks very promising.

Thanks Mary
