In my quest to break my Diet Coke habit I have a new favorite drink-- chai! I have always liked it but the cost and calorie count made it not an option for daily consumption. After a bit of investigating, I decided to try to make my own and after a bit of trial and error--success!
I make it with skim milk and stevia (home grown) to keep the calories in line. I made a gallon of it this weekend and am really enjoying it.

I am hoping to make the next batch with half caffeine/half decaf. I am a certified caffeine addict and am trying to kick the habit. I figured first get off the Diet Coke since caffeine isn't the only problem with Diet Coke, and then work on the caffeine.

3 Cinnamon sticks
teaspoon whole cloves
2 cardamon pods
4 star anise
sliced fresh ginger
2 tsp vanilla
Boil these in a gallon of water for an hour, adding more water as needed
black tea
stevia leaves
Add tea and stevia boil for another 5 to 10 minutes (I like mine strong)
Strain
skim milk
I do 2 parts tea mix to 1 part milk

Thanks for the recipe, LeeAnn! I'll try it too. I've been trying to get away from diet soda as well and have had less than inspiring results. Maybe this'll help. I've also found kombucha to be a great substitute, but I have to remember to brew it in advance to keep the culture going...sometimes it's too much like work.
Thanks again!

I kicked a long-ingrained Diet Coke habit and caffeine addiction over two years ago. I went cold turkey on the Diet Coke, but not the caffeine. Since I'm not a coffee drinker, I drank Water Joe (caffeinated water) for a while, slowly weaning myself down on the caffeine. It worked well for me!
The chai and kombucha sound like great options. And for those who "need" the caffeine and aren't into chai or kombucha, Water Joe is another great option. :) It's available in all our grocery stores around here.
Congrats on making the move to break the Diet Coke habit, LeeAnn! You'll be happy you did. I think it's one of the best things I could have done for my health!
