Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Get this, I had the "brilliant" idea of offering my house for a New Year's Eve party. I just got back from a trip to San Antonio that means I have a day and a half to plan this party.

The party is for about 20 to 30 people. They are all bringing snacks to share. The plan is to wait for the year playing games and/or dancing. I am going to empty my family room so we can dance in there.

Could you help me with some ideas? Any fun game ideas? what about drinks to toast the year? Do you have any suggestions of moderately priced champagne or spumante? what about music? any favorites?

I think it will be fun but I always regret offering my house when I have to plan!

Ideas welcome!!

Natalia, Pioneer Woman is posting a series of recipes for New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve Party Ideas is the first in the installment.

Then,

cheddar puffs

I think there are more to follow.

I made the stuffed mushrooms for Christmas, using feta cheese. They were great!

Natalia, have you ever played "What would you do if..?"

It's easy, takes minutes and everyone will be laughing in no time!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

All you need is scrap paper, a pen or marker for each person and a big bowl.

HOW TO PLAY

*Simply hand out a piece of paper and pen to everybody present. Each person has to come up with a question, starting with the words "What would you do if..?"
*Once each person writes their question down, they fold the paper and put it in a bowl.
*Next, everyone reaches in (one at a time) and takes one piece of paper out - but not their own!
*Now each person has to answer the individual question in writing on that same piece of paper.
*Everyone now keeps the paper they've just written their answer on.
*Starting at one end of the room, someone (could be you, the Hostess) reads her question OUT LOUD.
*The person sitting beside (for example, your DH) must answer your question with the answer he wrote on HIS piece of paper.
*JUST WAIT TO HEAR HOW FUNNY IT IS!
*Now, your DH reads his question OUTLOUD and turns to someone sitting beside him, who then reads the answer on their piece of paper.

Get it?

Eventually you will be the last to read your answer to the second last person who reads their question!

I promise, you'll be laughing so hard you'll definetly want to play it at least twice!!

Fun "break the ice" game!

We like this Mock Champagne. It is great for children and friends who don't drink alcohol.

How good of you to offer you home and hospitality!

Love,

Tami,
Those are some good looking recipes. They remind me of the Spanish tapas.

Nique,

I love the idea of the game. I think we might play it.

Angie,

Thanks for the Mock Champagne recipe. If I don't find the sparkling cider my kids like, I'll make this for sure.

Our friends who always invite folks over for New Years are really casual about it - they put out a large variety of games to choose from. Board games, card games, and encourage other general games (like charades - or the game Nique fits there too). You could also ask the party attendees to bring some favorite games.

A card game we have played there that is good for a large group is Nertz. You need a deck of cards for each player (or team) and they have to be easily distinguishable form each other so folks could bring extra decks.

And we played quit a bit of this game over the Christmas break since we were with my sister and bil, and my son who are alum and a current Franciscan U. student. I guess this is a staple game at FUS. It's Telephone Pictionary game. I found online directions here - Telephone Pictionary - it has some actual sheets from the game uploaded for you to see and get an example of how the game goes.

Another explanation of the game

It's quite fun.

Nique,

We had a great time. My friends are talking about making it a tradition.

We didn't get to play the game you suggested though. I'll
keep that one for next year My dd got all of us playing a game called Silent Football. It was hoot!

We had some Dominican music to dance to plus some Texas swing and Two-Step. We toasted the new year with Sparkling Wine and Sparkling Apple Cider. We ate the traditional 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight. And then we had a time of Praise and Worship. I was a success!! Thanks for asking.
