Does anyone know of a place online to find where Maureen Wittman outlines how they use Saxon math? I had the copy of that article in Mater et Magistra, but I gave my back issues away. And I have a copy of Catholic Homeschooling Companion, but I loaned it out and it hasn't come back to me yet. Anyway, I'm not looking to break any copyright laws or anything, but if anyone knows of a place that has this online, let me know please!

Melanie,
I checked and this isn't available on the free articles and unit studies page of Mater et Magistra.
I'm PM-ing you...I think I can help you out!

Hi Melanie!
Maureen here. I don't think it's online anywhere. I'd email it to you myself but my desktop bit the dust and it's not on my laptop so I don't even have it!
Basically what we do is MCP Math through 3rd grade. The Saxon books for lower grades are too labor intensive for me. I've got too many kids and too little energy. However, if you have kids who learn best through multi-sensory methods you may want to look into it. My kids are natural mathematicians (my college major) so the MCP workbooks work well for them.
Saxon has placement tests online so you can figure out which textbook you need to begin. What I do is start with Saxon 54 after MCP C. (We skip either Algebra 1/2 or 87 depending on that child's needs)
Usually kids don't need to start at the very beginning of a Saxon textbook. Books designed for schools take into consideration that students are at rest for 3 months and need a lot of regurgitation. We can forgo that as homeschoolers by "homeschooling light" over summer months.
To figure out where to start in the book, just do the tests provided at the end of the chapters until they get more than 4 or 5 wrong. That'll give you a pretty good idea of where to start.
If you can, stick to the later editions as they include lesson numbers next to test questions. For example, if your student misses a question on dividing fractions then you'll know where to find the lesson on dividing fractions so you may review.
For the upper levels, I like the Solutions Manuals. They are a million times better than simple answer keys as they show all the steps in finding an answer.
One other thing I do is to supplement with Real Books. This is key, imo. If you have For the Love of Literature there is a chapter on Real Math books to help you along.
Got to run and get the house ready for the annual Wittmann New Years Eve Party.
I hope this is helpful!
Merry Christmas!
Maureen :)

Oh, thanks so much, both of you. Thanks, Maureen, for sharing. We are always *behind* in Saxon, trying to do all the lessons, and I'm looking for a way to let my oldest move a bit faster. She understands the concepts and does well, we just slowly drift behind over the course of the school year. It'd be nice to have some wiggle room.
Sorry so late in responding. My computer is ill...it looks like we are going to have to reinstall windows, which may or may not work. So I'm on here today trying to tie up loose ends while I can...
